Query Text:

I am searching for my family's lineage in Ohio & Pennsylvania primarily. Through the help of a few librarians (especially one wonderful one in Williams County), letters my great aunt sent my dad when he was a kid, and Ancestry.com in the past few months, I have been able to gather a lot of information about my family, however it's mostly vague. But here's the best I have. My great-great-great grandfather's name was Elliot Miller more than likely. He was born between 1818-1824 (depending on the census record... however, I lean to around 1820 because of the date listed on his tombstone) in Pennsylvania (I don't know where in Pennsylvania however). I am pretty certain he may have had at least two brothers (I don't know about sisters) most likely named Jacob and John. Elliot's first wife was named Caroline Fiandt (also spelled Feandt and Fiant; also of Ohio) born between 1822-1824. They had several children including Cyrus Miller (who served in the 128th OVI company C during the Civil War), Benjamin Miller (who may have been a doctor as an adult, but I have nothing definite to prove this), Rebecca Miller (who died at the age of 18) and Elizabeth (who's married name was either Cassell or Cassill). The Millers were farmers living in WAYNE CO., Ohio... I found a census record showing Elliot & Caroline living in GREEN Township. Sometime between 1850 (the census that indicates the link in GREEN Township) and 1857 (the year listed as Caroline's death on her headstone), the Millers moved to WILLIAMS County, BRIDGEWATER Township and owned some land there. More than likely, most of Elliot's family moved there too, however the only one of his children I'm certain moved there was his daughter Rebecca. Caroline died in 1857 and is buried in GARDNER CEMETERY, also in BRIDGEWATER (I believe that one of Elliot's brothers was married to a woman who's maiden name was Gardner). Rebecca died in 1860, her cause of death listed as consumption. Around 1863, Elliot remarried my great-great-great grandmother, Mary Amanda Mullen (who was born in COLUMBIANA County but I believe moved to BRIDGEWATER as a teenager), DOB between 1838-1840. They had one son, William Burton Miller (my great great grandfather). Mary Amanda Mullen went by the name Amanda. Elliot died in BRIDGEWATER, January 1879 or 1880 but cause of death, I don't know. He was buried in GARDNER Cemetery as well and Amanda Miller took over the land. The information I have on her life is pretty vague after this point. William Burton Miller maried Anna Lucretia Smith in BRIDGEWATER either 1899 or 1900. (She was also originally from Ohio) They had 8 or 9 children, including my great grandfather, Robert Alexander Miller. They moved to JACKSON, Michigan sometime before 1920. I assume Amanda Miller sold her land and she moved in with a family friend after William moved his family. She passed away in 1927 and was buried with her husband in GARDNER Cemetery. Interesting to note that a baby is also buried in this plot and seems to have been an infant child of either William & Anna's or one of Elliot's children. In Amanda's obituary, aside from her son et. al. and the family she lived with, her step daughter Elizabeth (who's married name seems to be Cassill or Cassell and she lived outside WILLIAMS County) was mentioned in the article. Another thing I found noteworthy in this obituary is that it said she was friendly with many people in BRIDGEWATER and was referred to as "Aunt 'manda." Because of the dates, I have not been able to make deeper connections between all these events. Plus, since marriage certificates, etc. didn't require the place of birth on them at this time, I have been unable to locate where in Pennsylvania Elliot was from. A librarian in Wayne Co. suggested I contact someone to look at land records to b/c that might be listed on there. Another thing is that Elliot seems to be referred to in a couple of different ways. In the earliest census I found him in, he is referred to as B.E. Miller. Then, he is referred to as both Elliot and Elliotte in later census records, then later in his life, he's referred to as Elit. However, I theorize it was spelled Elliot. I have suspicions that the "B" stood for Burton because that is my gg grandfather's middle name and I don't see this name showing up anywhere else... but again, that is just a theory. Any information you might be able to find that would fill in these gaps would be GRATEFULLY appreciated. Even vague, perhaps loose leads would be appreciated. Thank you so much!
