According to the Last Will of Joseph WADDLE (grandson of Scottish Immigrant Thomas WOODDELL ) dated 7 Aug 1862 in Hamilton Co., Indiana, “4th I give and bequeath to Leander, my Grandson, one hundred dollars out of the above proceeds, and my dunn horse commonly know as Charley.” Based upon various census, civil war and death indexes, a murky picture of Leander is gained. Born in December 1844 in Indiana, the first census in which he is found is the 1860 Indiana, Hamilton Co., Wayne Township, page 130. He is living in the household of Michael and Maria GOOD with their two children and Maria’s father Joseph WADDLE. Leander enlisted in Company G., 104th Indiana Infantry Regiment in Marion Co., Indiana on 10 Jul 1863 and was discharged from the same unit on 18 Jul 1863. He then enlists in the 39th Indiana Regiment in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana on 24 Aug 1863. He was discharged as a Private from Company I, 39th Regiment on 20 Jul 1865 in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana. There is also a record of Leander WADDLE entering service as a Private in Company I, 8th Indiana Cavalry but with no date. This record shows he was discharge as a Chaplain from the 8th Indiana Cavalry, but again with no date. The 1870 Indiana census has Leander WADDLE as a 24-year-old working on a farm and living in the household of Jonathan and Susannah ANTHONY in Wayne Twp., Hamilton Co., Indiana. The next record is from the 1900 Indiana census, which has Leander WODDELL, a single 56-year-old boarding in the household of William and Alice BYRD on a farm in Clay Twp., Wayne Co., Indiana. There is no occupation listed. The next record is from the US Veterans Cemeteries, which has a PVT Leander M. WODDELL who was at the VA Medical Center in Marion, Grant Co., Indiana dying on 28 Mar 1903 and buried the same day in Section 1, Site 1093 in the Marion National Cemetery, Marion, Grant Co., Indiana.
