I have a brick wall with William Echols m Jane McCarley. My ggrandfather was Joseph Lafette Echols born October 22, 1853 in Alabama. "near Montgomery". Joseph was "orphaned". His mother died when he was around 3 and he possibly had an older sister named Sarah S. Echols. I found him first on the Lamar County Texas census poll for 1870 at the age of 16 living with the John and Cyrena Hendricks family. Living on the farm adjoining was the family of John Skidmore age 35. Wife listed as Sarah S. Echols age 17. Also living with the family is a child John (Achols) Echols age 9 and another child Elen (Achols) Echols age 7. I have not been able to locate any information on Joseph nor his father William. The census polls for Joseph always lists his father and mother as being born in Alabama. Joseph came to Somervell County Texas about 1874 at the age of 21 and there he met and married Laura West. They remained in this county the remainder of their lives. Raising 7 children named Algie Myrtle, Albert Gordon, Fred Milam, Mattie Alphis, Vera Belle, Grace, and Joseph Carlton. Joseph died in 1936 in Somervell County Texas and is buried in Squaw Creek Cemetery. Please check your databases and see if you have any information or a clue that might get me past this wall. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
