I recently found my GGGrandparents in the Bloomfield, Essex, NJ 1850 census on Ancestry.com. Harriet M. OLMSTEAD is living in the household of Horace PIERSONS, who is a merchant of considerable means. Her relationship to this family is not indicated, but I assume she must have been a domestic/servant. She is listed as 20 yrs old and born in NJ. She married Charles COOPER on 27 Feb 1850 in Bloomfield, Essex, NJ. Charles COOPER is also on the same 1850 census where he is a 22 yr old single Brass Roller, living in the Richard WAKEMAN family. Charles COOPER was born in England about 1828. I do find it a little confusing that the census for 1850 Bloomfield, NJ was taken on 29th of August 1850, and their marriage date is listed by LDS site as 27 Feb 1850. There are many Charles COOPER's listed in the passenger lists, but I believe that my Charles COOPER (my GGgrandfather) came to the USA about 1848, since he married in 1850 as noted. I have found Harriet and her husband Charles on several census starting in 1860 Waterbury, New Haven, CT and then in 1870 they had moved to Watertown, Litchfield, CT. Then in 1880 they are still in Watertown, Litchfield, CT where they have 4 children. Their oldest child Eugene COOPER is my maternal Ggrandfather. I posted a query on a message board about 2 wks ago and a kind responder said that the parents of my Harriet OLMSTEAD were George OLMSTEAD and Sophia KENT. I found George OLMSTEAD and Sophia on the 1860 census in Randolph, Morris county, NJ. And one of his sons, Silas OLMSTEAD & his wife Harriet,were living 3 doors away from his parents. The helping emailer also claims that George and Sophia had a total of 4 children and lists the following names as their children. John Baldwin OLMSTEAD--a 29 yr old Clothier in the 1850 census in Bloomfield, Essex, NJ; born about 1821 in NJ; married to a Phebe A. (maiden name unknown) born about 1825. Silas OLMSTEAD --born about 1835, NJ Caroline OLMSTEAD---may have married a "LEWIS"; living with John B. OLMSTEAD family in 1850 Bloomfield, Essex, NJ when she was 27 yrs old, born in NJ. Harriet OLMSTEAD--born about 1830 NJ. My biggest and most important quest right now is to find the parents of George OLMSTEAD and his wife Sophia KENT. I found George and Sophia on the 1860 census in Randolph, Morris, NJ census. George is listed as being 67 yrs old and born in NJ. There is no occupation listed for him. Sophia is listed as 61 yrs old and also born in NJ. These ages suggest a birth year for George as 1793 and Sophia's as 1799. I do wonder if George's folks may have been from the New Haven, CT area, esp since Harriet and Charles moved to that region shortly after marriage, & to raise their family.
