Query Text: |
My great grandfather Nathaniel Mitchell was born in Devon County, England and baptized at Stokinham church. His father was Robert Mitchell, and his mother was Jane White. He was born in 1843, and his father was a nurseryman, Nathaniel apprenticed as a nurseryman as well. He fell in love with the daughter of a client, who were of a wealthier family. She was advised by her family to ignore him. He emigrated to British Columbia Canada, in 1872, and after several years was able to purchase a crown grant of land in Delta, BC of 210 acres. In 1876 he sailed back to England for supplies and also to claim his love. She eloped with him to Victoria, Vancouver Island, later a part of British Columbia. Her name was given as Eliza Stone on their marriage register, her father she named as John Stone. She married Nathaniel in Victoria in 1877. they had two children survive. Edith Blanche Mitchell who married William Henry Burr in 1899 in Delta, and Henry Allen Mitchell who married Alice Mary Burr, daughter of Benjamin Burr and Margaret Ann Waters, in 1906. Eliza's parents disowned her, and she never saw them again. They told her they would erase her name from the family Bible. Well, we in the family cannot even find her in the public records. She was supposedly born in Exeter, Devon. her birthdate is in doubt, but approximately 1843- 1848. We know nothing of any siblings, nor her mother's name. Mother's name may have been Edith. Nathaniel had an uncle named Henry Allen Mitchell who was a cook in the Royal navy (1861), and he married Annie Steed. They also came to Victoria, BC where he operated a Nursery and Seed Store with his partner Philip Johnston, but he and Annie returned to Devon to live out their lives, and are buried in the churchyard of Stokenham Church. Nathaniel and Eliza both died in Delta, BC and are buried in Boundary Bay Cemetery in Delta, in our family plot. Any help in the matter of Eliza's family would be appreciated. Thankyou. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
