My grandmother gave me a letter written by a fugitive slave Tom Ellis, runaway from Pendleton County, Kentucky. This letter was posted from Chatam, Windsor, Canada and is on file at the Archives of Canada. The letter says as follows "Dear Mary, I take this opportunity to inform you that I am well at present and hope that few lines find you living in the blessing and that the rest are also well. The girls here have joined the Methodist church and Al has got married to Mrs. Hopday. I have saw most of the colored folks from our part of the country and I think this is one of the best countries that I ever I has been. There is lots of colored people here and more a comin' every day more or less. OH DEAR MARY how would I like to see you. I would give all of the world to see you, but I can't be a slave again. Tell the Master I would like to see him. and Mistress and all the rest of the folks, but give me my liberty before all of the world, give my best respects to all of my inquiring friends, but give all of my love to yourself. Wright to me here at Windsor, and let me know how all of the folks are gettin' along. I remain yours truly til Death. So may God bless you dearest, from Tom Elice to Mary Warner. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
