Looking for information on or connections related to my great-grandparents Frank E. HILL and Hilda KOISTI or possibly KOISTE, KOSKI. Both were born in Finland around 1887. Frank Hill is rumored to have come to the U.S. at age 12 by himself as a deck-hand. He may have been born in Helsinki. It is also rumored that his Finnish surname may have been Palomaki. Hilda's maiden name was either Koisti/-e or Koski. The dates of immigration have been very difficult to find due to conflicting information and name confusion. They lived among Finnish speaking settlers in the Dakotas between 1910 and 1930. My first record of Frank and Hilda is in a 1910 U.S. census listing in Portage, Brown County, South Dakota, where they lived with Eli Buro (son of Matt Buro or Merta-Puro). They were married in South Dakota and were listed as living in Hecla (also Brown County). They then moved across the state line and lived in Dickey County, North Dakota - in Port Emma, Guelph, and Hudson. By 1930 the famiy had moved to the Port Angeles area in Clallam County, Washington, where Frank worked in the logging industry. The children were: Toivo, Ben, Helen, Maye, John, Francis and Phyllis (twins), Ero, Arthur, and Tillie (Hilda). I am particularly interested in finding out where they lived prior to the Dakotas, and whether there are other familial connections in the U.S. as well as their Finnish roots. I am also looking for information on the oldest child, Toivo, born in South Dakota around 1910, who reportedly went to prison for bootlegging and was never heard from by the family again. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
