Query Text: |
Johann Heinrich HANSMEYER/HANSMEIER and his wife, Christiane MEHRKAMP/MERKAMP/MEERKAMP arrived at the Port of New York on 30 May 1848 on the Bark Mercury. Their one year old daughter, Julianna was with them. After their arrival in New York they traveled to Muscatine, Iowa, where they settled for a few years. T The ship's manifest that was presented to the custom's authorities in New York lists Johann, as being a farmer. ARE THERE ANY OTHER RECORDS IN BREMEN OR BREMERHAVEN, WHICH MIGHT LIST EVEN A GERMAN PROVINCE OF ORIGIN? We keep hitting brick walls with this family. What a shame that the customs officials in Bremen destroyed these lists for lack of space! The city of Bremen should have offered some space for this valuable resource. With the development of microfilm the records could have been filmed and copies sold to the National Archives of the United States prior to WWII. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
