I am researching the MORTLAND family. My Great Grandmother (Elizabeth Mary Annie Mortland) was born and christened in Kamptee, Tamil Nadu, India on November 22, 1870. Her parents were John and Charlotte Mortland. John Mortland was a british soldier (Lancers?). I am not sure why, but Elizabeth Mortland is also listed as born in Durham, England. I am trying to establish a reason why she was born in India. Several of her sisters are also listed as being born in India. Why would some records state that she was born in India and other state England? What role did the Brithish Army play in this region of India in the 1860-70 time frame? John Mortland was from Scotland. Anyone with insights on this family may contact me at the email provided. Best regards, Jayne Compton | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
