My maiden name is Allison. My Allison/Ellison ancestors were in Orange County and Rockland Co., NY in the 1700s and early 1800s. They moved westward from NY to other parts of the country starting in the 1830s. Some moved to various counties in OH, some moved to MI and the next generations moved on to IN, IL, IA, SD, CA, WA and ID to mention a few. This was a family that didn't stay in one place and the various lines have lost touch with each other. I've learned as a result of an ongoing DNA project , that in addition to the US and Canada, there are also Ellisons and Allisons in England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand who are related to each other.
