I am looking for information on U. S. descendants of Anne (Andrew Van Dyke) Van Dijk, who emigrated to the U. S. from Amsterdam through Liverpool and Queenstown, Ireland to the Port of New York on June 10, 1890, on the ship Majestic, with his wife, Grietje Jongbloed and two daughters, Jeltje (later known as Josphine Van Dyke) born in 1887 and Maria Mintje, later known as Mary Van Dyke born in 1890. The family lived in Friesland, Netherlands. Grietje's sister, Sybrig Jongbloed, was my great-grandmother. She is shown as "Mary Esther" on the ship manifest for the Arizona, sailing from Liverpool on May 30, 1890 and arriving in New York on June 8, 1890. Her daughter, Jantje, age 11, was also on the ship. Both disappear from the records from that point. Sybrig's husband, Tjerk (Chester in the U. S.) Esther, apparently arrived in Grand Rapids, Michigan with eight children and no wife. The family is listed on the manifest as English, probably because they sailed from Liverpool. I think Sybrig, Jantje or both may have died in a detention center at the Port of New York for immigrants who were ill when they arrived, or they may even have been sent back to the Netherlands, dying en route. Any help with this mystery will be most appreciated. Dotty Smith | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
