Listers: I have been able to trace one of my Irish families back to the time they immigrated to England in the 1830s-1840s: the GORMAN Family. I am now looking for help to trace the GORMAN family back to Ireland, or, at least, to place them in a certain County in Ireland before they came to England in the 1830s-1840s. Here's what I know: GORMAN: I know for sure that STEPHEN GORMAN was born in Wigan, Lancashire, England, on 20 Jun 1878. I have the birth certificate. I know he died in Providence, Rhode Island on 31 July 1930. I have the death certificate. I had a hard time finding the birth of STEPHEN GORMAN because he was registered as MICHAEL GORMAN by his mother! The father of STEPHEN GORMAN was MICHAEL GORMAN. MICHAEL GORMAN died 14 weeks before his son, STEPHEN GORMAN, was born. MICHAEL GORMAN died on 3 March 1878 at the Wigan Workhouse of Typhoid fever at the age of 25. His son, STEPHEN GORMAN, was born 20 June 1878. I have the death certificate of MICHAEL GORMAN which states: Michael Gorman died on 3 March 1878 of typhoid fever at the Union Workhouse in WIgan. He was 25 and a coal miner. He gave his residence as 22 Victoria Street, Wigan. (At that time Victoria Street was located in Wigan at Location #117 in the area known as Wallgate.) His wife, Margaret, signed the death certificate, No. 442, with her “X” and it was registered 4 March 1878 by Robert Halliwell, Registrar. Gorman Michael Age 25 District Wigan Volume 8c Page 37 STEPHEN GORMAN's mother, Margaret Doran-Gorman, probably intended to name him MICHAEL after his father who died about 14 weeks BEFORE he was born! But, for some reason, MICHAEL GORMAN, Jr. later called himself STEPHEN GORMAN, the name of his Grandfather, not his father! [As an aside ... There is a STEPHEN GORMAN who appears on the UK Census of 1851 who may be the grandfather of MICHAEL GORMAN who later called himself STEPHEN GORMAN. At that time this STEPHEN GORMAN lived at Carrodus Square, Keighley, Yorkshire. He was 18, born in Ireland, unmarried, laborer and a lodger together with his father PETER GORMAN, 65, born in Ireland, married, but wife living in Ireland, a working gardener. There is a family lore that says: STEPHEN GORMAN was born in Ireland, perhaps in the village of Nobber (au Nobair), County Meath. Interestingly, this village is just about due west across the Irish Channel from the Wigan/Liverpool area, i.e., the shortest hop possible. Family lore also says the Gorman family may be associated with the Matthews family of that village and also the Daly family. Again, interestingly (see below), a George Daly was a witness to the marriage of MICHAEL GORMAN and MARGARET DORAN in 1875.] There are no births recorded in Wigan for a Michael Gorman from 1845-1855. There are two births for Michael Gorman near Wigan and they are recorded in Ashton. Ashton is an alternative name for Ashton under Lyne and it spans the boundaries of the counties of Cheshire and Lancashire. If Michael died in 1878 at the Wigan Workhouse, age of 25, according to his death certificate, then he was born in 1853 in Liverpool. The 1871 UK Census shows a Michael Gorman living in Liverpool, born 1853. Lamon. Witnesses George Daly and Alice Doran. James Jolley, Registrar” MICHAEL GORMAN signed his own name and MARGARET DORAN signed with her "X". GEORGE DALY signed his own name and ALICE DORAN signed with her "X". MICHAEL GORMAN was 23, Bachelor, Coal Miner, residence: Queens Hotel Yard, Wallgate, Wigan. Father: STEPHEN GORMAN, Laborer MARGARET DORAN was 24, Spinster, Cotton Factory Worker, residence: Miry Lane, Wigan.
