Joseph Alcock, born 16 Oct 1880, Yorkshire. He arrived on the Dimietta on the 31st December 1863 in the Cape. At the age of 22. Later trekking by ox wagon to Natal where he started farming in the Newcastle district at a place later called "Alcock Spruit". There he was joined by his brother Thomas and formed a partnership of a trading store at "Alcock Spruit". There he married Mary Hogg, the well-known daughter of Peter Hogg.
