BUTLER : GRISWOLD : HOWARD : STONE

Query Text:

Sarah Stone & 2 husbands: Henry Howard & Thomas Butler, Sgt. Sarah Stone born about April 3, 1625 All Saints, Hertford, Hertfordshire, England and died after 1719 in Connecticut – married September 28, 1648 in Wethersfield Twp, Hartford County, Connecticut to possibly first Henry Howard born about 1623 in England and died March 17, 1709 in Hartford, Wethersfield , Connecticut (his will dated 20 January, 1707-8 – proved april 4, 1709)- Henry arrived in America in 1634 aboard the ‘Francis’ at age 7 or 8 years, under the care of John Barnard. Henry’s residences Hartford and later Wethersfield; he was a malster from Wethersfield. They had 6 (or 9 or 13) children (1 set of twins). Sarah married possibly second Thomas Butler, Sgt. born about 1637 in Hartford, Suffolk County, Connecticut and died August 29, 1688 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut – married 1658 in Hartford, Connecticut. Thomas and Sarah were married and lived in Hartford, CT. In town records, Thomas was a ‘chimney viewer’ in 1667-1668 and a ‘townsman’ in 1682-83. He received an ‘upper lot in the Long Meadow’ in his father's will of 1677. They had 12 (or 15 or 22 children) (dates 1661 to 1687 with a possibility of 3 sets of twins). I am wondering if Sarah had 2 husbands and how many children did she actually have? My line of descent is Mary Howard m. Thomas Griswold... I show Sarah Stone’s father was: Samuel Stone, Reverend born July 30, 1602 in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England; came in 1633 in the ‘Griffin.’ He removed as a settler to Hartford in 1636 with the Thomas Hooker Congregation and was Pastor of the First Church after the death of Thomas Hooker; he served as Chaplain to the troops under Captain Mason in the Pequot War in 1637 and he died July 20, 1663; his first wife, Sarah’s mother died in 1640. Sarah was raised by Richard Webb (1580-1656), probably after the death of her mother. Richard lived in Hartford for only a couple of years before moving to Norwalk. (Richard Webb - he died [1665] leaving no children but took Sarah, daughter of Rev. Samuel Stone, and brought her up, until she married Thomas Butler of Hartford.) Any clarification on this family is greatly appreciated, lindajcox3@hotmail.com
