Susan Elizabeth BIRBECK, who was born in the district of Darlington, County Durham, England in 1882, met William Edgar SAYER probably in Hull around 1904/05. William, himself working as a shipping clerk, made several trips to USA from 1904, and Susie followed him to US via Ellis Island c.1907. William and Susan appear to have married around 1907-1914, possibly in Jamestown, Chantagua, New York State - could anyone check the US marriage records for me??. (Interestingly, Susan travelled to Ellis island under the name of Birkbeck, status `married' in 1907, while William Edgar Sayer was still listed as single in 1909. The 1930 census for Susie suggests she married William in 1908 at the age of 25 but it wasnt until 1912 that passenger records list William as married.) Susan appears to have made several subsequent trips back to visit family in England, and to give birth to her son George Dennis in Hull on 28th October 1915. She was also visited by her sister Winifred in 1914. Initially the couple lodged at various lodgings in Jamestown, Chantagua County, but by 1920, according to the census for Buffalo, they were living in a rooming house in Fargo Avenue with their son George Dennis Sayer (the suggestion that the couple also had a son called Louis who died as an infant has not been confirmed as yet.) William Edgar was now working as a French polisher. Family hearsay suggests that the couple subsequently separated, but unfortunately I have found no further evidence as yet to support this. However, it is apparent that within two years William was dead, possibly from Pneumonia, and funds had to be sought by the US authorities from his father in England for his burial. In 1924, two years after William's death, Susie remarried! The name of her second husband was Joseph BETTS who was one of 6 brothers and a sister, born in 1883 in Crewe, near Darlington, England. By 1901 he was an apprentice Bricksetter, living in Monks Coppenhall. Then in 1911 aged 29 he sailed for New York where he stayed with a friend in New York City and soon made US his permanent residence, though he made at least one further trip home to England in 1913. Joseph, who incidentally was 5'11 with dark hair and brown eyes, continued to earn his living in US as a bricklayer. Anyway, by 1930 Susie, now aged 47, was living in Jamestown, Chantugua County, New York State with Joseph and her son George now aged 15 (she had no further children with Joseph). Susie died in 1965, 10 years after husband Joseph, and she was buried at Sunset Hill cemetery, Jamestown. And her son George? Well, at the age of 28 US military records indicate that during WW2 George Dennis Sayer enrolled in the US Army. His veteran Service covered the period 29 Jan 1943 - 27 Jan 1946 and he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. No more is known until 1962 when George, now a Hotel Manager, and married, fell ill while living at 111 Hillcrest Street, Altamonte Springs, Seminole County. He was admitted to the VA medical Center hospital in Bay Pines, Pinellas County, Florida where, after 10 days, he died on 18th July 1962, aged only 46. He was buried at the US National Veterans Cemetery in Pinellas County on 23 July. I would love to find details of George's wife and any children!!!!! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
