Adoptee was born June 9, 1951, boy, was given a name, David Lynn Spiers(not sure of last name spelling... Spears, Speirs, etc.) Born in New Orleans, La. at Touro Infirmary, Volunteers of America, Adoption and Maternity Program Metairie, La Birth mother was 15 years old, 5'4" tall, 116lbs., had curly, auburn hair and blue eyes and was Baptist. Her special talent was music and played the clarinet in school band. It was reported that the birth mother alleged that she was raped by two boys and this incident resulted in her peganancy. The story was that she was raped by two boys after leaving a movie. The two boys were are arrested and a trial was held in connection with the rape charges. However, both boys were acquitted during the trial. Perhaps rape could have been a more socially acceptable explanation for being pregnant out of wedlock during this time. The person thought to be the birth father of the child was 20 years old at the time of the child's birth. He was of English and Irish ancestry. He was Baptist. He had graduated high school and planned to attend college to study journalism. After high sschool, he worked for the local newspaper. He was 5'9" tall weighed about 145lbs. He had blue eyes and light brown hair. Following the trial, he went into the service, but it does not indicate which branch of the service. He played on the high school football team and played trumpet in the school band. Following the child's birth, the birth mother returned to the maternity home to recuperate. She signed the surrender of parental rights on July 19, 1951. The birth mother left the maternity home on the same day. It was noted that arrangements were made for the birth mother to go to the Volunteers of America in northern Louisiana to comlete her education She and her family agreed that this would be a better option than the birth mother returning to her home town. It was indicated that the news of the alleged rape and subsequent trial were known throughout the town. The birth mother and her parents felt she could make a new start in a new town. Adoptee was placed with his adoptive parents because they had a similar background and the birth mother's adoptive family, similar physical characteristics, and a shared interest in music. The child was placed with the adoptive parents on August 30, 1951. Final Decree of Adoption: Juvenile court Parish of Orleans Louisiana Decreed that the minor child, (David Lynn Spiers), known to petitioners as Sherrod Ross Towns,II, is and shall forever hereafter be, to all legal intents and purposes, the child of the petitioners, Mrs. Elizabeth Joyce Lyon Towns, wife of and Henry Sherrod Towns, to the same extent as if said child had been born of petitioners' marriage to each other..
