CLARKE OR CLARK, HENRY C. OR HENRY CLAY Born Aug. 9, 1837 "on the high seas" or Norfolk County, Virginia. Family records indicate that the family was originally of New London, CT. The senior Clarke was a sea captain and his New London based ship sank off the coast of North Carolina during a severe storm in 1837. Henry later was working as a railroad engineer in New England 1855-1860 before heading west for the gold rush.
