I am researching my great great uncle, John Gould.He was born circa 1836 in Somerset, England, married in 1866 Elizabeth, nee Jay, and had a daughter, Mabel circa 1870. He allegedly raped, and made pregnant,a neighbour's daughter, Elizabeth Court, and as a result, was transported to Port Arthur, Tasmania around 1870. However, transportation to this region had ceased by 1853, so this appears unlikely. There is also a suggestion that the woman concerned, who was speedily married to John's brother, Joseph,had not been totally unwilling. John was seen by a relative back in Somerset in the early 1900s. I have no further information. Joseph and most of his numerous children, including John's child, emigrated to the USA around this time, and I have much information about them. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
