I'm researching my family line FITZPATRICK. All I know is that they came from Mayo, and they called the place in Mayo "Ampworth". Actually, that is the way someone interviewing descendents many years ago transcribed the word onto paper. I've been told that "...Far enough back, Ampworth may have been a phonetic pronunciation of an old Gaelic placename, among several other possibilities, the most basic ' An Port ' (pron. on porth) meaning the port." They emigrated to Canada first, then down into Minnesota where I was born. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on breaking my brick wall. Thanks! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
