I am researching my family tree in Ontario, Canada. Through my great grandfathers(Alexander) marriage certificate of 1898 I found that my great,great grandfathers name was also Alexander. The marriage certificate shows that my great grandfather was born in Lucan, Ontario in 1870(he was an only child). A check of the 1871 Ontario census confirms this and also shows my great,great grandfather and his wife(Sarah Jane Armitage). In the section where it ask for place of birth for my great,great grandfather all the renumerator put down was U.S. I have also checked the 1861 Ontario census for my great,great grandfather and found him living in the township of Lobo, Ontario,(very close to Lucan),not married and living in a hotel. It gives his age as 29(he would have been born approx: 1832) and again the renumerator only put born in the U.S. I cannot find my great,great grandfather in the 1851 Ontario census but many of this census was incomplete. I am stuck at this point. Any information or suggestions would be appreciated. This is what I know to date: 1. From present to the birth of my great grandfather the family tree is complete 2. I know my great grandfather was an only child 3. I know my great,great grandfathers name was also Alexander 4. I know my G.G. grandfather was born approx: 1832 in the U.S. 5. I DO NOT know where my G.G. grandfather was born in the U.S. or when he and/or his family came to Ontario 6. Through the course of tracing my family tree I have come across many different spellings of our last name(Schaeffer,Schaffer,Schafer,Shafer and finally Shaver.
