Donovan family of County Waterford, Ireland. James Donovan, born Co Waterford Feb. 12th, 1842 to Patrick Donovan (born 1803) and Abby/Abigail (Gobnat in Gaelic) Hanly (born 1812). They belong to the parish Stradbally/Ballylaneen (the civil parish of Ballylaneen is encompassed by the Catholic parish of Stradbally) and Kill. James had two sisters, Mary born 1834 and Bridget born 1844. The three children came to American (Illinois) at different times. Would like to know what happened to the parents. There is nothing in the church records. We have not looked in the cemeteries yet of that area for Donovan graves. Abby's parents were James Hanly and Brigid Walsh. Another daughter found; Margaret born 1817. Patrick's parents were Patrick Donovan and Mary Lampart. Also have two more children for this family; Margaret Donovan, 1811 and Michael Donovan, 1814. James Donovan came to American in 1860 with his sister, Bridget. Mary came over before the 1850 Illinois census. James was living on the farm of Dennis and Ann Curran and Bridget was living on a farm of Daniel Halligan, info taken from the 1860 census of Palos, Cook County, Illinois. Both Curran and Halligan have surname ties to the same parishes in Co Waterford, in the church records, where the Donovan are from. Bridget married Thomas Welbourn. Mary Donovan first married Patrick Scanlon and after he died in the Civil War, she remarried Michael Powers, a soldier friend of her first husband. James married Mary Coleman. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
