Query Text:

Hello, my name is Dennis Smith. I am a descendent of some of the Smith’s who appear to have lived around the cities of Oak Grove, Marion, and Latta in the 1800’s. Their exact locations are not known by me. Some of my relatives still live in the Latta area, but unfortunately, I do not know them. I would like very much to learn more about this part of my family, especially about John D. Smith (1810 – 1868) my g.g. grandfather, but I have hit the proverbial brick wall. I know a little about him, but not if he was born in this area or came from somewhere else, nor where he is buried. I started out 2007 knowing only that my grandfather, John Frederick Smith, had moved to Atlanta from somewhere in South Carolina. Through census records, I was able to find the names of his siblings and mother. However, if it were not for the kindness, and generosity of so many people in South Carolina, the story would have ended right there. When I learned where my grandfather was from, I began researching the area by reading books such as W.W. Sellers’ History of Marion County, along with a lot of other information. I then managed to create a mental picture of this area, and some of the very interesting people living around the Pee Dee region in the 1800’s. I read about Crossroads Henry Berry, Christopher Dew and many others. Imagine my surprise when I learned that I was related to some of them, or that based on actions they were friends, or did business together. Not being from this area, I am hoping the following information will help someone recognize my family, and then maybe trigger a recollection of these particular Smiths. John D. Smith lived close to a well-known person from that time-period commonly referred to as Crossroads Henry Berry. John and Henry apparently were good friends, and I say this because John named Henry as the guardian for three of his children at the time of his death. I cannot imagine entrusting your children with someone unless they were a very good friend. There is mention of John in some land records as an appraiser with Henry, and Mr. Berry mentioned in his Will some farmland that he had rented to a few of my relatives. John and family are found in the census records living very close to W.W. Sellers, and he appeared on some documents in which Mr. Sellers was the attorney of record. John D. Smith (1810-1868) married twice, and had many children. His first wife, Martha Jones (1820-1861) was probably a daughter of Frederick Jones. John remarried after Martha died. He married a much younger woman named Sarah Elizabeth (1839-1877), whose surname is not known to me. After John passed, not only did Sarah remarry a Mr. James Moneyham, but apparently one of John and Sarah’s daughters, Demarius Smith married a John F. Moneyham too. John D. Smith and Martha Jones were married abt. 1834, and they had seven children. After Martha died, John and Sarah Elizabeth had three children. Children of John Smith and Martha Jones are: i. Hamilton S Smith, B: 1835 ii. James K. Smith, B: 1837. M: Sarah Jane Jackson in 1866. iii. Ferdinand D. Smith 1836 - 1907. M: (1) Unknown (2) Martha C. Hayes. (My Great Grandparents) iv. Elizabeth Jane Smith, B: 1845. M: Nicholas T. Porter. v. Amanda C Smith, B: 1848. M: William A. Porter, B: 1846. vi. Nancy Ann Smith, B: 1850 viii. Anna Maria Smith, B: Nov 1853 Children of John D. Smith and Sarah Elizabeth are: ix. Demarius Smith, B: 1861. M: John F. Moneyham. x. John Richard Smith, B: 1865 xi. Hepsey Lavina Smith, B: 1867. M: G. Harper. My Great Grandfather is Ferdinand D. Smith, the third child of John D., and Martha C. . Ferdinand married twice, with children from both marriages. Children of Ferdinand Smith and Unknown first wife are: i. Martha Smith, B: 1867. M: Thomas Fore. ii. Estella Smith, B: 1869 Children of Ferdinand Smith and Martha C. Hayes are: iii. Amanda Jane Smith, 1880 - 1939 iv. Neil Smith, B: Dec 1881 v. Thomas H Smith, B: 1883 vi. John Frederick Smith, 1886 – 1930 (My Grandfather) vii. Joanna Smith, B: 1888 viii. Kilgo Smith, B: 1889 ix. Minnie Smith, B: 1891, (1910 Census shows her with vi. in Atlanta.) x. Daisy Smith, B: 1893 xi. Bessie Smith, B: 1895 xii. Gurley Smith, B: 1898 Ferdinand was apparently single when he went off to war at the age of 25. He joined the South Carolina Volunteer Army (S.C.V.A) in the town of Secessionville, located on James Island. He was in Company E of the 23rd regiment. The companies within this regiment, as with many others, tended to be comprised of friends, neighbors, and families. Company E included many volunteers from Oak Grove, Marion, Latta, and other nearby communities. His Company Captain was Charles Fladger, another native of this area. Unfortunately, Reverend Fladger was shot by a deserter from the Maple Swamp area. As the war winded down, Ferdinand was wounded at the siege of Petersburg, V.A., in his right side by a mini-ball. Sometime between 1861 and 1867, Ferdinand married, but I have not been able to ascertain her name. My guess is that she probably passed away giving birth to their second child. I say this because I see that their second child was born in 1869, and then Ferdinand shows with no wife in his household in the 1870 Census. The 1880 census shows Ferdinand as a widower, however later records show that he and his second wife had a child born that same year. Therefore, it is safe to assume that he was married again in 1880 after the census was taken. Ferdinand married Martha C. Hayes, my Great Grandmother. Martha was born 20 May 1861, and died 2 Oct 1916. She was related to many well-known individuals in this area at that time. She was the second great granddaughter of Andrew Berry & Nancy Ann Smith, the great granddaughter of Mary Ann Berry (sister of Crossroads Henry Berry) and Christopher Dew, Sr. Her grandparents are Marina Dew and Captain Henry H. Hayes (U.S.N. Chaplain, and brother of Reverend Eben Hayes) Martha’s father and mother were Elton B. Hayes and Martha Jane Hayes. Ferdinand was living with his oldest daughter Martha Fore at the time of his death in 1907. His daughter Martha was married to Thomas Fore, and they lived in Mallory Section of (now) Dillon County. This address is from Ferdinand’s State Civil War pension showing his address as Mallory. Ferdinand is laid to rest at Bethesda Southern Methodist Church Cemetery. His widow, Martha C., remarried to Evander Lane and is buried in the Smith/Hayes Cemetery near her grandparents, Marina and Henry Hayes. Any information that you could provide about mine or any of these families would be tremendously appreciated.
