John Armstrong was born on July 12th, 1834 in Weston, Spaulding County, East Lincolnshire, England. His parents were Thomas Joseph Armstrong and Barbara Childs. Thomas Joseph was born on July 25th, 1791 and died April 16th, 1869 and wed Barbara Childs on Aug. 9th, 1831 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire. His parents were Joseph Armstrong and Elizabeth Worley. Barbara Childs was born in 1806 to George Childs and Sarah Atkinson, who were married on May 4th, 1798 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire. Barbara died on June 8th, 1857 in Weston, Lincolnshire, England. After coming to America in 1866, he married Mary Jane Golding, on March 22nd, 1872. The Goldings were from the same area in Lincolnshire back in England. Mary Jane was born on Jan. 13th, 1855 in Mokena, Will County, Illinois, daughter of Richard Golding and Ann Beck. After John got to America and before he was married, his father died back in England. He actually received a letter “edged in black,” dated April 25th, 1869. (How long did it take for that letter to go from England to Illinois in 1869? A few months?) His father had died on the 16th of April. We know the letter did find its way to John because we have it today. This form of correspondence was a way to alert people that the message in the letter, edged in black, was about death. John passed away on March 22nd, 1899 (on his 27th wedding day anniversary) and Mary Jane on Oct. 10th, 1940 and are buried at the Pilot Cemetery, Herscher, Kankakee Co., Illinois. John and Mary Jane (Golding) Armstrong had eleven children, all born in Pilot Township, near Herscher, Kankakee Co, Illinois, and all of them married there. (A son, William, and daughter, Mrs. Susan Cleland, have preceded her (Mary Jane). She leaves to mourn her departure, four daughters and three sons: Mrs. Mary Bigelow of Rockwell City, IA.; John Armstrong of Jolley, IA.; Mrs. Barbara Handley and Mrs. Bessie Rebholtz of Kankakee; George Armstrong of Aurora, IL., one brother, John Golding, Sr. of Goodrich, a number of nieces and nephews. 25 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Now more on the GOLDINGS-Richard Golding was born on Nov. 28th, 1824 in Weston, Lincolnshire, England to George Goulding and Mary Desborough. He was the youngest child of 10. George and Mary were married on Nov. 26th, 1806 at Weston. On May 15th, 1846, Richard Golding married Ann Beck at Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England. Ann was born on Sept. 29th, 1825 in Whaplode, Holbeach Marsh (Spaulding area), Lincolnshire, England to Elias Beck and Sarah Elizabeth Sharman. Elias and Sarah Elizabeth were married on Oct. 20th, 1818 at Spaulding. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
