My ggggrandfather John Lock(e) died in Port Louis, Mauritius of cholera on 30/1/1862 (aged 63) and I am very keen to find out any information regarding this family connection in Mauritius. John emigrated from Bath, Somerset, UK to Australind WA then Wonnerup, Busselton, Western Australia in 1842 with his wife Maria (nee Bavage) and their children Henry, John, Elizabeth and Charlotte. The spelling of their surname changed from Lock to Locke not long after emigrating to WA. John snr and his son Henry (who was based in Mauritius as stated on the death certificate for his father, John) had a merchant trading business in Moka Street, Port Louis. The family bred and raced many horses in Western Australia and interstate after emigrating from Bath to their homestead "Lockeville" in Busselton (south west WA). In the 1841 census for Bath, Somerset, UK John was shown as a leech and glass bottle merchant and Henry was involved in the tobacco business. The death certificate for Henry (died Moka Street, Port Louis 20/12/1880 aged 57 years) shows that his mother was not my ggggrandmother Maria Locke (the name of Marie or Maria Sivignac was stated as Henry's mother), so I would also like to investigate this piece of interesting information. Henry was the oldest son, so John may have been married before. It also seems that Henry was married in Mauritius, as his spouse on the death certificate is Letitia Duman. A Lewis Duman is stated as witness (and business proprietor with Henry at Moka St) on John Lock's death certificate. I can't find any reference to John and Henry being buried in WA and would also like to find out if they were buried in Mauritius and where. Also if the name's Duman and Sivignac would hold any connection to my research. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
