I know little about my Summerscales line; what I have begins on my Hilton genealogy Web site at http://www.hiltonpond.org/genealogy/wc04/wc04_108.htm with my great-great-great-grandfather George Summerscales (Sr.), whose granddaughter Emily is my direct line. Here is what I've been able to glean: The 1851 census shows a George (age 37) & Elizabeth (38) Summerscales living at Caddy Field in Southowram, Yorkshire, England, with five children. In order of age, they are John (16), Mary (14), Henry (12), George (5), and Elizabeth (8). I believe the age of Elizabeth to be incorrect in on-line versions of the census and that her actual age of “3” was misread or incorrectly transcribed as an “8.” Censuses almost invariably listed Children in exact chronological order. If Elizabeth was 3 in 1851, she was born in 1848--which is the actual birth year we have for her from other sources. Since no other Summerscales families are listed in Southowram for the 1851 census, I believe George Summerscales is a direct ancestor.
