This is a bit of a long shot, since the relationship that I am about to describe between the Bonfield and Austin families is an indirect one at present, but perhaps we can assist each other. Let me first outline the relationship. On January 31, 1842, my ggggrandfather, Zachariah Austin was married to Ann Sweetland in Chard. The ceremony was witnessed by Samuel Bonfield and Jane Sweetland (who I think was Ann's sister). In addition, Samuel Bonfield was married on the same day and place to Jane Sweetland, and their ceremony was witnessed by Zachariah Austin and Emanuel Mutton (the church clerk). Samuel Bonfield is described as an iron moulder and his father is John Bonfield. I know Zachariah's parents--Samuel, a soldier (1779-1824) and Susannah Coombes (later Parker) (1785-?)--but I have been unable to go any further back than that. Samuel and Susannah seem to have come from the Uplyme area? and were apprently married in Chard in 1814. Curiously, Zachariah was born in Jersey (perhaps because he was born out of wedlock in 1813 or perhaps because Samuel was stationed there). In any event, Zachariah seems to have lived in the Uplyme area with his family until around 1850. Your Samuel Bonfield seems to have been about six years younger than my Zachariah Austin, but I was wondering if there was not some friendship, working relationship or family connection that might help me to find out more about my Austins.
