My name is Pamela Winslow and I am descended from James Potter (c. 1816-?) and Delia (Wells) Potter (1821-1882). Delia is buried in the Van Dusen cemetery near Glens Falls, New York. They are listed in the Warren County censuses for 1860, 1870, and 1880. One of their sons was Fayette Potter (1853-1932) who married Ida (Barrett) Potter (1872-1954) in Iowa. Fayette was raised in Glens Falls, but left permanently for Iowa in the 1880s. Three of his siblings: Alice (Potter) DeMarsh, Eliza (Potter) Witherhill, and Orville Potter were living in Glens Falls when Fayette died. Fayette and Ida’s only son was Forrest J. Potter (1888-1972) who married Patience Beulah (Barrett) Potter (1891-1982). They lived their entire lives in Iowa. I am their granddaughter Recently, I noted that an Ezekiel Potter (1779-1862) and his wife Olive (Jennings) Potter (1789-1868) were buried near my great great grandmother Delia (Wells) Potter in the Van Dusen Cemetery in Glens Falls. I also noted that a Nathan Potter, Ezekiel Potter, and Olive Potter were counted in the 1860 census immediately before my great, great grandparents James and Delia Potter. In addition, an Ezekiel Potter was counted in the 1820 census for Ludlow, Massachusetts where he reported having a male child under the age of ten, which was my great, great grandfather’s age at that time. I believe that Ezekiel and Olive Potter could be James Potter’s parents. Family lore suggests that my Potter ancestors descended from Nathaniel and Dorothy Potter who were early settlers in Rhode Island. The line continues through Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Stokes) Potter, Stokes and Elizabeth (Sherman) Potter, and Nathaniel and Mary (Devol) Potter of Dartmouth, Massachusetts. That is as far as family lore takes me. Nathaniel and Mary Potter had four sons: Stokes who married Rebecca Shaw; Joseph who married Dinah Gifford; Cornelius who married Deborah Carr; and Stephen who married Bridgett Allen. I have no idea which of these four couples, if any, are my direct ancestors. I have only found one child, a daughter, for Stokes. Joseph spent most of his adult life in Fort Ann near Glens Falls where all but one of his many sons were born. I have found no record of Cornelius’ children. I believe that Stephen had two sons. None of the offspring I have found was an Ezekiel or a James. As of yet, I have not been able to establish a definite connection between my great, great grandfather James Potter and Ezekiel Potter or any other Potter ancestors. If you have suggestions, I would be very grateful. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
