Query Text:

Looking for information about Thomas Carle "The New Brunswick Loyalist" (31 Jan 1741/42, Tarrytown, Dutchess Co., New York-Bef. Feb 1824, Queens Co., N.B.)The Tale of a Little Brown Book. A good thing happened for us recently; a wonderful old leather bound book came in the mail from British Columbia. This was found over half a century ago near Robetson's Point, Queen's County, by a little girl playing in an abandoned house. In a broken-down cupboard among some magazines was this little brown book. ... recently, because of its age and its contents she decided it should come to the Queens County Museum for safe keeping ... The title of this book is "Every Man His Own Lawyer", prepared by someone with the initials "G.J.", and published in Hanover Square, London by Hugh Caine in 1768. ... dedicated to "the Right Honourable Thomas Lord Viscount Gage" ... The name inscribed in this book is "Thomas Carle" ... On a blank page in the book are the following entries: Thos Carle was Borne January 31th 1742; Susanah Angevine was Borne October 31th 1737; Lewis Carle was Borne September 27th 1768; Sarah Carle was Borne January 5th 1770; Jane Carle was Borne November 30th 1771; Isaac Hunt was Borne February 18th. 1771; Susannah Carle was Born August 18(?)th 1775; Amy Carle was Born May 12th 1776; Thomas Carle Jr. ,was Born April 26th 1779; Mary Carl was Born August 5(?)th 1781. From this list, we can make some suppositions: the name of Thomas Carle's Loyalist wife is recorded as Sarah Sloat, but it appears that she may have been his second wife, and that his first wife was Sarah Angevine??? ... Also there are several Carle Children born between 1768 and 1781, but only six came with them in 1783. The editors suggest that either Mary or Amy died before they left New York because there are records of another Mary Carle, daughter of Thomas and Sarah, born November 1, 1790; and of an Amy, daughter of Thomas and Sarah born April 25, 1795.
