Subject: William John McCann m. Una Dodd. Research Objective: Gather details on Wm John’s parents (Owen & Sarah) and siblings, if any. William John MCCANN was born 5 Feb1838 in Belfast, N. Ireland, and died 24 Jan1919 in Auburn, Placer Co., California, USA. He was the son of Owen MCCANN, b. abt. 1810, and Sarah C. TIFFNEY. He married Una DODD [Unna DOD] on 13 Oct 1863 in Gibraltar. Una was born 10 Sep 1842 in Purfleet, West Thurrock, Essex, England and died on 11 Mar 1920 in Auburn, California. Her parents were Thomas DOD, b. abt. 1819 and Sarah Martha VINER, b. abt. 1819. For 30 years, William “John” MCCANN (and family) served in the British Army. His regiment was the 100th of Foot, Prince of Wales’ Royal Canadians. His highest rank held was of Sergeant Major, but retired as an honorary Captain. A recent review of his military records reveals that his point of enlistment was Toronto, Canada, in 1859 at the age of 21. My current assumption is that his family had emigrated to Canada from Ireland in the early 1840s, possibly as a result of the famine. Since John became a Colour Sergeant within a year of his enlistment, another assumption is that he had prior military schooling as a youngster. His military posting included various locations in England and Ireland, Gibraltar, Malta, Canada, and India. His unit also returned to Canada for a posting in Oct 1866 to deal with the Fenian incursions. While his regiment was transferring to the Canadian posting, a child, William H. McCann, was born at sea prior to arriving at an unidentified Canadian port of entry. However, I believe John and Una McCann, with daughter Sarah Una McCann, b. in Malta, could have arrived in Montreal via the St. Lawrence River steamer “Quebec” on or about November 3, 1866. The 100th of Foot regiment moved to Ottawa for a while, then back to Montreal in July 1867 to help celebrate Canada's Dominion Day. His other children were: Arthur Charles, Clara, Robert James, George Alfred, Frederick Albert, Amy May, James A., and Frank Vyner. John’s last overseas posting was in Bengal, India abt. 1878. From there he return to Ireland and England postings until his retirement in 1888. He then emigrated to America through New York and immediately traveled to his final home in Auburn, California. A lifelong Mason, John MCCANN became a fruit rancher, agricultural commissioner, and later, a real estate broker. My family web site is located at 1woodmccann.home.attbi.com.
