Hi, I wonder if anyone in their research traced Barr family members back to Northern Ireland? As you probably all know, the Barr clan originated in the South-West of Ayrshire, Scotland where to this day a village called Barr exists. Barr in Scots celtic language means on top of a small hill and this may have given the name to the village or indeed to our name itself. Anyway, it is likely that a number of the Barr family moved to Ireland from Scotland during the plantation of Ulster and/or later. Some moved to Londonderry, but most moved to Counties Antrim and Down. My lot hail from Co Down where they seemed to set up in the Ballynahinch, Saintfield areas. The male names are the usual: Robert, John, Samuel, James, with popular female names being Sarah, Mary, May. I have info on my great great grandfather living in Saintfield Co Down but am keen to trace back to Ayrshire and to discover if relatives at that time also moved to America, Newzealand or elsewhere. Any info would be appreciated. Many thanks, David Barr | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
