we are searching for clues to our family's real last name. the americanized name is nathan, but we don't know whether that name was based on the real name, or a first name of one of the family members, or chosen randomly. they were jews who came from kilvarija, in southwest lithuania, right at the polish border. (they married families in punsk, poland, just across the border.) we know they traveled from kilvarija to upstate new york in the 1890s, but that their real name was changed, probably at ellis island. we have not found anyone who knows the real name. on a recent trip to lithuania, we were unable to find any clues, including checking with the government's office of records that keeps track of jewish history. | |||||||||||||||||||||
