Query Text:

I am trying to research my grandmothers family, of whom we know little about. My grandmother was Nina Villette Blake born 31st August 1913 in Morden Road, Merton, Surrey. She was christened Nina Violet Blake as the vicar carrying out the service did not believe that Villette was a proper name. The name Villette came from a Comte de Villette who fled France during the Revolution to the west country where he married a local girl and took her surname of Blake. Nina was the daughter of Charles William Blake and Emily Florence Wright. Charles was a laundry manager. Charles and Emily married on 1st July 1911 in Kentish Town, London. Their address is given as 82 Tolip Street. Charles William was born on 6th December 1882, in London I think. He was the son of George Thomas Blake, a railwayman. Emily was born 20th May 1884, the daughter of John Wright, a groom. Charles had a brother who ran a pub in Harrow. His name may have also been George Thomas Blake. Charles and Emily didnt really want any children but would have tolerated a son. They employed a young girl Margaret Allen (from Gillingham, Kent) to look after her. Nina spent some of her childhood with relatives in Honiton, Devon. At an early age she was taken in by an uncle and aunt in Eastbourne, who owned Eastbourne Laundry. Margaret Allen went with her and continued to look after her. Her father Charles died before he was 52, and her mother Emily died aged 47. When her aunt in Eastbourne died to, her uncle remarried. Nina left and moved to Ealing where she lived in the YMCA. She had a supervisory job in a local laundry. She met my grandfather Edward Tyrrell Garner-Richards and they were married within 6 weeks! Nina Violet and Edward Tyrrell were married in St. Stephen's Church, East Twickenham, Middlesex on 13th April 1935. One of the witnesses was a George Thomas Blake, who I believe was probably her uncle from Harrow. They had three children Peter, Edward and Janet Lilian. I would appreciate any information that anyone might have on my grandmother's family. Thanks Paul Garner-Richards paul@garner-richards.freeserve.co.uk
