Annie Motes Chastain and William Chastain lived at Fort Chastain which was located in what is now Hiawassee, GA this was about 1820 to 1840. They both spoke the Cherokee language and assisted in the relocation of many of the area's Cherokees to Oklahoma on the famous Trail of Tears. They did not move to Oklahoma as many of the Cherokees that had white blood stayed in the hills of North Georgia, Tennessee, NC, and SC. My interest in this is from James Hamilton Stancil and Sarah Jane Taylor. I do know something about the reported American Indian heritage. Sarah Jane Taylor Stancil's mother was Mahulda Caroline York Taylor,. The Cherokee came through her mother Sarah Jane Chastain York (who applied for the Cherokee tribal roll) whose mother was Annie Motes Chastain and father was William Chastain.
