We are seeking information regarding descendents of Prince Evans who was born circa 1829 in Waynesboro, Georgia. Following the Civil War, the Evans family (Prince Jr., Charles, Nathan, Georgia, Enoch, Jack, Walter, Ned, Lindsey, Neller and Dianah)relocated to Hephzibah, Georgia presumably to be closer to their long time friends the Walker (Peter, Nathan, Ceclia). The family, based on information in the family Bible, was very active in the Franklin Covenant Baptist Church. In 1892 Enoch Abram Evans--our great grandfather--became an ordained minister of the Church of God denomination. We know that he and some of his in-laws founded a church in, we believe, Hephzibah or it might have been Augusta. We have been unable to decipher the name of the church. We also know that Enoch and his second wife, Dolly, moved to New York City in 1900 then very shortly thereafter returned to Augusta. In 1908 or 1909 he and his family returned to Far Rockaway, New York where he became the first pastor of the First Church of God in Far Rockaway. By 1910 he, his second wife and their three children returned to Augusta but Enoch left his three children by his deceased first wife in the care of his two sisters-in-law. Enoch Evans died in 1918. We are desparately searching for any descendents of his sibblings. We have no idea as to what their names may be but we believe that there are some living in Augusta. Our grandfather, one of the sons by Enoch's first wife, never returned to Augusta although we have heard family members mention in passing the names of Augusta relatives who visited New York City. Most of those visits took place in the 1920s and 1930s. We have tried to contact the minister of Franklin Covenant Baptist Church but the original church burned down in 1940 and there are scarce records in existence prior to the building of the new church. Any help you may be able to provide will be greatly appreciated. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
