I have been looking for information that would confirm the origin and dates of birth and death of my great-great-grandfather, Samuel O'Neil, and his parents, James O'Neill and Mary Atkinson. (or at the very least disprove that they were his natural parents) I have found no information on Sam's siblings. Sam and his Wife Kate are burried in a Catholic Cemetary in Orchards/Vancouver, Clark County, Washington. Next to their son Samuel Edward O'Neill. Samuel O'Neill/O'Neil Born: 16.Aug.1859 Buffalo, Erie, New York, USA Died: 13.June.1935 Orchards/Vancouver, Clark, Washington, USA His parents names, as listed on his death cert. are: James O'Neil and Mary Atkinson Wife's Name: Catherine/Katherine/Katie/Kate Ward Born: 23.March.1863 Jefferson, Wisconsin, USA Died: 04.March.1941 Orchards/Vancouver, Clark, Washington, USA Her parents were: Father: Martin Ward Mother: Celia ? Farley This Cath Ward could be her: 1880 US Census: Martin Ward and family Koshkonong, Jefferson, Wisconsin Cath Ward Census Date: 1 May 1885 County: Ramsey Locality: St Paul Ward 6 Married in St. Paul, Minnesota: 16.May.1885 The marriage license (although having a file number) looks incomplete. There is no parent information, no witness information and no residence information. Census appearences for Sam and Family: 1895 Wisc. State: Lawrence, Chippewa, Wisc. 1900 US Census: Lawrence, Chippewa, Wisc. The 1910 US Census: Fourth Plain, Clark, Washinton State, is the only time I've seen the Surname spelt O'Neal and the only time I have seen Sam's Father and Mother listed as born in N:Y. Also, the first time I've seen his wife's father listed as born in N:Y. and her mother born in Pennsylvania.) 1920 US Census: Fourth Plain, Clark, Washinton State 1930 US Census: Fourth Plain, Clark, Washinton State Children: William M. O'Neill b. Minnesota 1886 – Samuel E. O'Neill b. St. Paul, Minnesota 1887 – 1963 James Henry O'Neill b. Glen Flora, Wisc. 1892 – 1971 Mary K O'Neill b. Wisc. 1894 – 1983 Nellie A R O'Neill b. Wisc. 1895 – Augusta Eva M O'Neill b. Wisc. 1897 – 1959 Mildred X G O'Neill b. Orchards, Washington 1902 – 1970 Enid T O'Neill b. Orchards, Washington 1905 – 1994 Francis Arnold O'Neill b. Orchards, Washington 1908 – 1959 Sam's death cert. is the only document that states that his father's name was James and his mother's name was Mary Atkinson. The informant was his wife, but she was in her 70s, I don't know how sharp she would have been at the time. She simply stated that his parents were born in Ireland. The few family stories that I'd heard about Sam make things even more confusing. There may be a grain of truth, but it may just be distant relatives (now deceased) trying to make up for their lack of information. I hope that Sam's history is a little more simple than the following family tales. Warning. Read the following with caution. May cause dis-information. One cousin said that she heard Sam was an orphan. And may have been put on one of those orphan trains from Buffalo. Another said that he became an orphan after the sudden death of his Irish parents in Canada, possibly New Brunswick. He was then sent to live with an uncle along with his brother and sister. Then he ran away with his brother and worked along the East Coast. But that story doesn't explain the insistence throughout his life that he was born in New York (Buffalo as his wife specifies on his death cert.). Nor does it explain how he migrated west. I'm in Europe, so any ideas of where to write to would be helpful. Best regards, Gerald O'Neill | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
