Query Text:

I've spent countless hours trying to find the carpenter August Nord and his family in the U.S. censuses. He emigrated from Gothenburg to New York on 23 Apr 1869 -- his final, planned destination was St. Peter, Nicollet, Minnesota. August was born 29 Sep 1841 in Sjöberget, Bälinge, Älvsborg, Sweden, to Anders Nord and Catharina Svensdotter. August's full name at baptism was Johan August Nord. On 10 Nov 1867 he married Maria Pettersdotter who remained in Sweden until May 1885 when she and three children (two were stepchildren), according to the local "departure census" for Bälinge of that year, left that parish for the U.S., probably to join August. But I've only been able to find two of the children in the Swedish database EMIGRANTEN. It seems like the children Robert Wilhelm (born 24 Dec 1868) and Ellen Maria (b 13 Apr 1876) went without their mother and younger brother on 15 May 1885 (Göteborg-New York) -- it's possible the two stayed in Sweden permanently. In the same year, on 6 Feb 1885 to be precise, a relative, Anna Charlotta Nord traveled from the same village, via Göteborg to the planned destination of Ridgway. I don't know where this town is located but I guess it might be the one in Colorado. It is possible that there were Nord relatives living there. Anyone who can prove this assumption? Two other children (one a stepson) of August Nord emigrated later: Hilda Charlotta, born 8 Jun 1867 in Bälinge, left Göteborg (Haga) on 5 May 1885 for New York. This was just ten days before her two siblings mentioned above! Hilda was unmarried. Her half-brother, Johan Emil Nord, born 28 Nov 1871 in Bälinge, emigrated from Göteborg to New York on 4 Aug 1911. He traveled alone, leaving his wife Albertina and children Rut (1898), Ernst (1899), Gertrud (1901), Knut (1904), and Gösta (1907) in Göteborg, Haga parish. If they joined him in the U.S. or if he returned to Sweden is unknown. If anyone has any clues or suggestions, please contact me! I would be overjoyed in finding these people!!
