I am searching for my ancestral family. The surname is Tam. I am told they lived in Xinhui,China. My mother was born there. Her father was number 5 of ten sons born into the Tam family. His name was Tam Bing Chun. His wife's surname was Chin. He was a businessman and doctor. I think he had a hospital. They lived in a compound that was taken over by the Japanese during the war. Unfortunately my Grandfather and Grandmother died during the war. He had a younger brother who was pretty famous in NYC's Chinatown. His name was Tam Bing Yung. He owned Bo Bo restaurant and Sun Sing Theater under the Manhattan bridge. He died about 15 years ago. My mother had a falling out with that branch of the family early in her marriage to my father so they never spoke again. He was supposed tot take care of her after she became an orphan , but instead, he married her off to my father who was a drinker, gambler and womanizer. He knocked her up with 5 children and left her to fend for herself in a strange country with no language skills to speak of. When she asked he rich uncle for help, he ignored her please and told her she had to go back to her husband and just deal with it. She did with her held up high. But at family functions where she had to go to like his adopted son Robert Tam's engagement party, and wedding, she was the target of ridicule and shame. It was my mother who introduced him to his bride. It was a shame that no one gave her any sympathy or help. as a result, we 5 children really suffered and never felt that we had "family" to lean on or just know who they are. To this very day.. my mother does not have closure, but it is too late for her... the stress was too much and she lost her mind. From a young childhood, I have strove to survive this and overcome the discrimination that this branch of the family put upon us. I ignored our blood ties because I felt it was the ultimate betrayal. I have been very lucky to be able to travel all over Asia and do great charitable works. My husband and I have a non profit called Give Children A Choice. we travel to Laos, Cambodia and China to build schools for underprivileged children. I have no intention of contacting my dead uncle's family. But I have a chance to go to the land of my mother's birth. I want to go to my Grandfather's grave and pay my respects. I know they were a very powerful and influential family during the early 1900s. If anyone can help me, that would be great. Thank you for your attention regarding this matter. Sincerely, Barbara Shimoda | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
