Query Text: |
My great-great-grandfather, John "Jack" Fletcher WALTON, was born in Jackson County, AL 10 Oct 1832. His parents are listed on his death certificate as W.W. WALTON and Rosa SARTON both born in Kentucky. No dates are given for his parents, nor where in Kentucky they originated. Sarton may be a misspelling of his mother's name. Sometime between his birth and July 1856, Jack moved to McMinn County, TN where he married Lucinda M. ERWIN who was born in Tennessee about 1828. The couple had at least three children in Tennessee: Alfred Byington WALTON (1865-1887), Sarah E. "Sallie" WALTON (1860-1936) and Amanda "Manda" WALTON (b. 1862) they moved to Jackson County, AL between 1862 and the birth of their daughter Clementine WALTON (1865 in Alabama). They had two additional children who were not documented. It is assumed that these two children died in infancy. Jack WALTON enlisted and served in the Third Tennessee (Lliard's) Infantry Regiment, Provisional Army of the Confederacy 22 Feb 1862 at Calhoun, TN and served through July 1863. The regiment was captured and paroled during the Vicksburg, MS campaign. Apparently, Jack WALTON did not return to combat duty with that regiment when the parole was exchanged. This was not an uncommon occurrence with men from the Third Tennessee. When the 1860 census was taken, my Walton family was living in District 9 of McMinn County. The family is found in 1870 in Kirby's Mill, Jackson County, Alabama; Mr. Walton's given name is clearly shown as "Jackson." with Lucinda as his spouse and children; Alfred, Sarah, Mandy and Clementine. I have not been able to locate this family on the 1880 census of either Alabama or Texas. Jack WALTON and family: wife, Lucinda; Alfred WALTON and Sarah WALTON plus two married daughters: Clementine and husband George Clemmons KEY; Manda and husband, Miles Russell HURLEY left Jackson County approximately 1884 and traveled to Grapevine, Tarrant County, Texas where they settled. If anyone has any information regarding any of the above persons I would happy to share my research and information. Richardpcrowe@gmail.com | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
