I wonder whether anyone can help me with a frustrating problem. According to family tradition, my g.grandmother, Mary Jewell, was born in Clovelly, went to Cardiff as a cook, where she met my g.grandfather, and then settled in Milford Haven. Her maiden name is confirmed on my grandmother's birth certificate, and my grandfather's name is given as David John Davies, an engineer on a steam boat. Parish records give her age as 83, when she died in 1837, giving her probable year of birth as 1854 or thereabouts. Tradition has it that her father was a farrier (or related trade, like blacksmith). The problem is this: I can't find any likely Mary Jewell or Mary Davies (or a likely David John Davies) on the 1881 Census, neither can I find them in Milford Haven on the 1991 Census. I can't find a marriage between them in the GRO index between 1870 and 1892, when my grandmother was born (in Milford Haven), and she had two older brothers (Matthew and Edward) and an elder sister (Gertrude). I've also checked the IGI and FreeBMD with no results. I've searched all the regions of the 1881 CD-ROMs until they're beginning to wear out. Any suggestions as to what I do next, apart from waiting until the 1901 Census? (Even if that does help, I still don't understand why I can't find them on the 1881 Census.) -- Barry Johnson Monmouthshire | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
