My great-great-grandfather Thomas McGowan was born 1825 in Ireland. He immigrated to the United States and lived his life in Newtown, PA. with his wife Catherine and their children. By trade, Thomas McGowan was a "Wheelwright" or carriage maker. According to the 1850 US Census for Newtown, PA dated August 23, 1850 it does indeed state that the occupation of Thomas McGowan is that of a "Wheelwright". He died in 1870 and is buried at St.Marks Catholic Cemetery in Bristol, PA. I noticed in both the publication "The History of Newtown, PA" and on the website of the Newtown PA Fire Association, that there was a carriage manufacturing store by the name of "WARNER & MCGOWAN" located at 212 South State Street, Newtown, PA. I somehow feel that this could either be my great-great-grandfather or perhaps my great uncle Thomas McGowan. I would really like to seek out more information to the carriage shop and the owners if possible. I do not know where to turn, but I think it is pretty coincidental. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
