Looking for information on William Stapleton, who as a young, single man immigrated from Cregg, County Tipperary, Ireland, about l820. He married Emma (aka Emily) Gillens of Beachy Cove, Portugal Cove, Conception Bay, Newfoundland. They moved and took a claim to several hundred acres of waterside lands at Horse Cove, five miles southwest of Portugal Cove. Most likely, his father's name was "Michael Stpleton," as his first son's name was Michael. Other sons were Thomas, Edmund and John. The Stapleton family still live at Horse Cove which name was changed to St Thomas in l922 by government order. St Thomas was incorporated a town in October, l977 and its first council elected and sworn into office in May, l978. In l992, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador when the Well administration was in power (Liberals), amalgamated the Towns of Paradise and St Thomas along with other rural adjoining areas into the Town of Paradise-St Thomas. However, erelong Mayor Dianne Whelan and her Council initiated with government approbation, a referendum to change the town's name simply by dropping St Thomas as "Town of Paradise." Since St Thomas was about one-fifth in size demographically as Paradise and the referendum vote was lumped together, it followed that St Thomas, a hitherto proud Irish-Catholic enclave in Conception Bay, was wiped from the map of this jurisdiction politically rather than it being historically retained as a Wardship. As Paradise is the fastest-growing town in Canada in population, soon none will know of the existence of St Thomas. I served as one of its first elected Council of seven. Mayor and D/Mayor at the time were elected by a plurality of voting counci. Dick Squires was the first Mayor of ST Thomas and Gerald Lawlor its first Deputy Mayor. An accountant, Spencer Thistle, a former Town Clrk of Paradise, was hired as a part-time Town Clerk of St Thomas, since law required all Newfoundland towns to have a clerk. Emily Stapleton, nee Gillens, was the sister of my great, great, grandmother Mary Lowry, nee Gillens. Our family changed the spelling of our surname for the first time officially in the Voters' List of l928 for St Thomas then in the Electoral District of Harbour Main, Newfoundland. My gg grandfather was Michael Lowry and he came to Newfoundland about l815 from Stradbally, County Laois (then Queen's), Ireland. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
