Looking for the parents and other relatives of James Jacob SHARKITT (Sharkett), born in Roscommon, County Roscommon, Ireland about 1841. Parents may have Barnard Sharkitt and unknown. He came to the United States (possibly by way of Canada) as a young boy with another family (presumed to be relation) in the early 1850s. He may have sailed to US from the port of Killmen (probably misspelled) County Clare as this location appears in military enlistment papers as place of origan. He first appears in US records in January 1863 when he enlisted in Company B of the 157th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the Philadelphia area. He became a US Citizen on 26 August 1868 at Clarksburg, West Virginia. He married Margaret English on 27 September 1877 at Mason, Warren County, Ohio. Margaret's parent were James A. English and Mary McGrath. They lived in Felicity and Dayton Ohio, and Richmond, Indiana. He died 30 June 1906 at Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana, and is buried in the Veteran's Section of Erlam Cemetery, Richmond, Indiana. His wife and her second husband are buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Richmond, Indiana. Other of his discendants have been to Ireland in search of family but with limited success. In 1954 my uncle interviewed persons who gave the following information: 1. The location of two Sharkitt blacksmith shops in or near the town of Roscommon; 2. The fact that the Black and Tan's destroyed by fire the shops, Catholic church, public buildings, and other structures, thus destroying all records; and 3. SHARKITT is also spelled SHARKETT and SHARKET. All are derivitives of SHARKEY. It is believed that most, if not all, are related, if one can trace the families back fare enough in history.
