Grace Raymond Helmick was born to Charles W. Helmick of Helena Montana. He was a civil mining engineer in the late 1800's. Grace was born on July 7, 1891. She had a brother, Walter, born May 1894. Grace attended Swarthmore College and Stanford, majoring in math or engineering. She gave suffragist speeches in Montana and was friends with suffragist politicians. She went to China around 1915 to marry Jesse Earnest Hayes, where she helped run his engineering firm in Shanghai. She had a son, Wallace Dean Hayes, in 1918. She died returning to San Francisco in 1920 or 1921. It is unclear whether she died on shipboard or in San Francisco. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
