Looking for parents and/or siblings of Selby R. HOWARD born 1831 in Ohio. Census records say his father is from PA and mother from MD. Family spoken history says his parents died when he and siblings were young. The children were farmed out to neighbors, relatives and friends. Selby Howard is on the 1850 census in Jackson, Pickaway, Ohio living with a Shaw family. We believe there is a possibility his father is David HOWARD born between 1800-1810. David is in Jackson, Pickaway, Ohio on the 1830 census with a wife, Sarah JOHNSON. David Howard and Selby Howard are not on the 1840 census in Jackson, Pickaway Ohio. On the 1840 census there are extra males David's age living with Jonathan HOWARD in Walnut, Fairfield, Ohio and a different Jonathan HOWARD in Walnut, Fairfield, Ohio and also a John HOWARD in Walnut, Fairfield, Ohio. There are other possible parents in the area including the three men above - but David seems to be our main suspect at this time. Other Howard children living with other families in the 1850 Ohio census which are possible siblings are: Rebecca HOWARD born abt 1832 and Nancy HOWARD born about 1834 living with the Shephard family in Darby, Pickaway, Ohio Mary A HOWARD born about 1839 living with the Epley family in Canal Winchester, Fairfield, Ohio Daniel HOWARD born about 1836 and Catherine HOWARDborn about 1838 living with the Courtright family in Bloom, Fairfield, Ohio Henry HOWARD born about 1842 living with the Breman family in Violet, Fairfield, Ohio Leah HOWARD born about 1843 living with the Deity family in Violet, Fairfield, Ohio. Maybe someone reading this knows one or more of the above children. Would appreciate knowing information about them. Another theory for a mother is a Sarah HOWARD born 1805 who is listed without a husband on the Greenfield, Fairfield, Ohio 1850 census. She has other children William 19, Daniel 17, Sarah 15, Catherine 12, Susan 9, and Jacob 6. In which case Selby could be working for the Shaw family as he is 21. What we know about Selby is: Selby R HOWARD married Nancy Jane MERRILL 25 Feb 1855 in Circleville, Pickaway, Ohio. Nancy's parents are John Merrill and Jane CARLY. Selby and Nancy's children are: John H Howard born 1856 Ohio married Mary A Blue in 1879 Joseph Newton Howard born 1857 Ohio married Effie Ann Carlock in 1880 Mary A Howard born 1859 Ohio married John A Bone who died before 1880 2nd. marriage was to James M Williams in 1880. We believe this Selby to be the same Silvy listed in Dunkard, Greene, PA 1800 census. Believe him to be the son of Vachel HOWARD and Jane DENUNE. There is a Denum (Denune), John, Cornelius, Duncan, Abraham and James Howard in Dunkard in 1800. Vachel and Jane Denune Howard had sons Denune, Selby, and Cornelius. Vachel Howard being the son of Thomas Howard (descendant of Mathew HOWARD)and Priscilla Selby.
