I am trying to trace ancesters of my grandfather, JOHN HAGERTY DONAGHY, 1851-4 -1927, in Washington, Allegheny, and Armstrong counties, PA. His father, JOHN DONAGHY,b.ca 1802, graduated from the Philadelphia College of Medicine (Phila.PA)in 1848 (proven, after immigrating from Ireland, and was said to have practiced medicine in Canonsburg/Chartiers Twsp,PA, m. MARY ANN NICHOLSON. John Sr. died ca 1860-70 John Jr was placed with three unmarried Foley cousins living in Chartiers Twsp(census 1870). In 1876 all four moved to Orange,VA. The Foley sister's mother was MARTHA HAGARTY (HAGERTY), 1790-1870. Their grandfather was JOHN HAGARTY, 1764-1848, "who owned a steamboat line on the Ohio River", and of whom I inherited a really nice portrait. The Hagartys had some connection to Armstrong County, or at least to Leechburg, in that I have a photo album in which the flyleaf has an inscription; "Presented to M. H. Foley by the Students of the Leechburg Prsb.(?College) June 26th 1863". Judging by both the census of 1860 and 1870, she was not living at home with her mother and two sisters in Washington, Chartiers Twsp, PA. The M. H. above is MARTHA H. FOLEY, 1826-1892. (her sisters; Mary Ann, 1820-1886 and Jane R., 1828-1899). There is another reference to a Freeport and Allegheny which leads me to believe the Hagertys originally lived close to the river north of Pittsburg. If anyone recognizes any of these names/dates please contact me.
