Query Text: |
Hello everyone I wondered if you might be able to offer some help in breaking down this longstanding brick wall for me please. My wife Fiona's 3rd great grandmother Louisa Tranter was born in abt 1806 at Great Bridge, Tipton, Staffordshire, England. Louisa married Henry Holland (1806-1846) at St Thomas Church, Birmingham, West Midlands, England on 17 July 1826. Louisa and Henry Holland had eight children (Joseph, Ann, Harriett, Betsy, Mercy, Charity, Faith and Hope) in England between 1829 and 1844. Henry Holland died in 1846 and his widow Louisa married again to a much younger man named Joseph Timmins (1824-) on 8 April 1849 at St Phillips Church, Birmingham, England. I found Louisa on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 England censuses but I could not find any record of her in England after 1861. For the longest time, I assumed Louisa had died in the 1860s but I discovered more recently that this was not the case. Two of Louisa's daughters (Betsy and Mercy) got married in England and then they emigrated to Lonaconing, Allegany County, Maryland, USA. Here are their details: Elizabeth 'Betsy' Holland (1834-1904) married Daniel Nightingale (1834-1900) on 15 May 1854 in Stafford, England. Daniel and Betsy Nightingale had six children (Samuel, Louisa, Joseph, Frederick, Daniel and Mercy) in England, before emigrating to Maryland in about 1867. They had a further four children (Sarah, Mary, Minnie and Gertrude) after they arrived in the USA. Mercy Holland (1838-1901) married Thomas Nash (1832-1906) 1n 1856 West Bromwich, England. Thomas and Mercy Nash had a daughter named Hope (1858) in England before emigrating to Lonaconing together with Daniel and Betsy Nightingale. Thomas and Mercy had another child named Thomas Curtis Nash in 1889 after they arrived in the USA. I found both our Nightingale and Nash families living in the same district of Lonaconing on the 1870 USA census. I was delighted to see a lady 'keeping house' whose name was transcribed as "Louisa Limings" but who I am certain is our Louisa Timmins. Louisa's age (65) and place of birth (England), together with the fact she appears on this 1870 census with the Nash and Nightingale families appears to confirm this. I can't find a Louisa Timmins (or a variant thereof) on the 1880 USA census so I assume she died between 1870 and 1880. I have been unable to find a death record or burial record for Louisa Timmins and that is where I hoped someone might be able to help me please. Although Louisa's surname of Timmins was badly mistranscribed as Limings on the 1870 USA census, I assume her surname would have been recorded correctly at her death. I have not seen any evidence to suggest that Louisa might have remarried again after 1870, so Timmins is very likely to be the name on her death/burial record. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you. David | |||||||||||||||||||||
