GORHAM - Alfonse Hammersmith, 76, a lifetime resident of Gorham, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, at his home. He was born Oct. 8, 1906, at Gorham, the son of Anon and Anna Barbara (Schmidtberger) Hammersmith. He was a retired farmer and railroad worker. He married Silvverina Quint on July 28, 1930, at Gorham. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Gorham, and the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, of the home, one son, Alfred; Ellinwood, two daughtersm Mrs. Ernest (Darlene) Mattas Jr. Wilson, and Mrs. James (Virginia) Rathbun; Natoma; four brothers, Isadore and Herb, both of Gorham, Leo, Leavenworth, and Eugene, Ellinwood, two sisters, Mrs. Bridgett, Graf, Woodston, and Mrs. Katie dauwe, Plainville; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church; Gorharm; burial in the church cemetery. Parish rosary will be 7:30 tonight at Cline Funeral Home, Russell, follwed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8. Friends may call at the funeral home until the time of service. Former Hays Man Is Electrocuted While Working At Rusetl Frank Befort, 27, Gorham, an oil field worker, formerly of Hays, was electrocuted Tuesday while working with a well service unit west of Russell. The mishap occurred at 12 p.m. Two other men were assisting Befort on an oil well pulling unit behind the headquarters of Holt Welt Service on U.S. 40 at the city limits of Russell when a piece of equipment fouled a 2,400-volt powerline. Befort was killed. The other two men escaped injury. All three men were employed by Holt Well Service. Befort is suvived by his widow, Darlene and two children, Rosemary, 4, and Margaret, 23 months. All of the home and a brother, Clarence, Hays. Officers ar Russell said Befort's parents are both deceased. They were the late Mr. and Mrs. John Befort, Hays. Funeral services for Befort will be at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic church in Gorham. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Russell Mortuary, Russell, Kansas, is in charge of arrangements Silverina Hammersmith WILSON-Silverina Hammersmith, 76, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth, Kansas. She was born Feb. 24, 1913, at Emmeram to Martin and Agnes Quint. She moved to Victoria with her parents at an early age. She married Alfonse Hammersmith July 28, 1930, in St. Mary Catholic Church, Gorham; he proceeded in her death. She was a homemaker. She moved to the Wilson Nursing Home, Wilson, in October 1983 and had lived there til her death. Survivors include a son, Alfred, Ellinwodd; two daughters, Virginia Rathbun, Natoma, and Darlene (Befort) Mattas, Wilson, and 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Feb. 14, 1931) Russell Worker Is Electrocuted Russell--Frank Befort, 27-year-old oil field worker was killed Tuesday when a piece of equipment fouled a high voltage line. Befort worked for the Holt Well Service and the accident was behind the firm's headquarters on US 40 at the west city limits of Russell. Befort and two other men, one Alfred Hammersmith, were working on the oil unit. His companions were not hurt. Befort leaves a wife and two children. The family lives at Gorham, eight miles west of Russell, Kansas. William J. Befort, 83, 2502 Sherman, died Wed. Nov. 22, at the Hays Medical Center. He was born Fed, 2, 1917, in Hyacinth to John C. and Barbara (Steinbock) Befort. He was a farmer, did custom wheat harvesting and worked in the custodial department at Fort Hays State University for 16 years. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church of Hays, Kansas. Josephine Mary Pfeifer, 89, Centennial Towers, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Hays Medical Center. She was born June 27, 1912 in Munjor to John C. and Barabara (Steinbach) Befort. She married Alex P. Pfeifer on Aug. 19, 1941, in Hyacinth. He died Nov. 9, 1992. She was a homemaker and had worked in housekeeping at St. Anthony Hospital, Hays. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. Survivors include two sons, Leonard F. Pottsboro, Texas, and Jerry, Jamestown; a stepson, Edward Pfeifer, Hays; a daughter, Norma J. Ruder, Liberal; a stepdaughter, Mildred Dinges, Pottsboro; a brother, Aloysius Befort, Grand Island, Neb; four sisters, Jane Gottschalk, Hays, and Agnes England, Ester Stals and Bernice England, all of New Bedford, Mass.; eight grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; seven great grandchildren; 14 stepgreatgrandchildren; and six stepgreatgreat-grandchildren. She was proceded in death by six brothers, Alex, Connie, Francis, Clarence, John and William J.; and three sisters, Albina Pfeifer, Irene Wilson and Elizabeth Befort. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of May Catholic Church, with Father Don Zimmerman officiating; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. A parish vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
