He married Agnes Sander Aug. 18, 1936, at Gorham. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Gorham, and was a lifetime area resident. He moved to a farm south of Gorham in 1947, then retiredin 1975 and moved to Gorham. He also worked in the oil field s for 12 years for Tony Witt and was a carpenter for Windholz Construction, Victoria. Survivors include his wife, Agatha, of the home: a son, Marvin Hortin, daughters, Katie Bellindir, Victoria, and Mary Lou Wherry, LaCrosse; a brother, Leo, Lansing; two sisters, Bridget Graf, Woodston, and Katie Dauwe, Plainville; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was proceded in death by sisx brothers, Albert, Herb, Clarence, Alfonse, Eugene and Celestine, and one sister, Sarah Armes. Service is 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Gorham, with Father Didacus Dunn officiating; burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Gorham. A parish vigl will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Cline's Mortuary, Victoria. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. until service time Monday at the mortuary. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of St. Anthony's Hays. William J. Befort, 83, 2502 Sherman, died Wednesday Nov. 22, 2000, at the Hays Good Samaritan Center. He was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Hyacinth to John C. and Barbara (Steinbach) Befort. He was a farmer, did custom wheat harvesting and worked in the custodial department at Fort Hays State University for 16 years. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Hays. Survivors include a brother, Aloysius, Grand Island, Neb., five sisters, Josephine Pfeifer and Jane Gottschalk, both of Hays and Agnes England, Esther Stals and Bernice England, all of New Bedford, Mass. He was proceded in death by five brothers, Alex, Connie, Francis, Clarence and John and three sisters, Albina Pfeifer, Irene Wilson, and Elizabeth Befort. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with Father Don Zimmerman officiating, burial in the St. Jospeh Cemetery, Hays. A parish virgil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials aare suggested to the Mary Elizabeth Maternity Home in Hays. Leo J. Hammersmith, Sr. Lansing-Leo J. Hammersmith Sr., 85, died Friday, January 18, 2002 at St. John Hospital, Leavenworth. He was born August 10, 1916, to Antone and Anna Barbara Schmidtberger. He married Freda M. Knoll on August 9, 1947, in Leavenworth. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving three years during World War II. He retired as superintendent from Leavenworth steel where he worked for 40 years. He was a member of the St Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Lansing. Survivors include his wofe, of the home, three sons, Leo J. Jr. Dave. A., and Chuck E., all of Lansing; a sister, Catherine “Katie” Dauwe, Plaineville; and three grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by seven brothers: Alphonse, Celestine, Albert, Herbert, Isadore, Clarence, Eugene, and two sisters, Briget and Seraphine. Services were January 21 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church; burial in Mount Calvery Cemetery, Lansing. Herman b. 1916 P: Gorham, Kansas Peter Brungardt, the first known of our ancestors came to Russia in 1766 and settled in Rohleder. Andreas his son moved to Herzog in 1791. Andreas Brungardt (1769) married Anna Maria Dopler, hence the name "Die Doplers" in Kansas today. Books are available at Holstein's in Hays, Kansas. This is a record mostly of the descendants of Peter Younger and Margaret Mermis. The Youngers came to this country in 1876 from Herzog, Russia to better themselves religiously, politically, and economically. Many other Germans from the Volga River area near Saratov, Russia, did the same. This work is not complete. It is an abridged form because the authors put together just what they could find in the church censuses of the several parishes that were available to them, and what they learned from the interviews with Rose and Clara Younger of Munjor, Kansas, and from family charts. Most of the families have five and six generations. Only one family that of Alois Younger and Mathilda Hertel has all the descendants--seven generations. Concerning the spellin of the name Younger, there are four variations: Junker, Yunker, Younker, and Younger. The various church records have one or the other spelling, yet all these people are related. In a few instances even the sibblings use different spellings. The Younger's Younger. ? m ? b. b. d. Cap. in his "The Joseph Engel Family" writes: Turning to the village of Herzog, Russia we meet a few families by the name of Younger or Junker, one of whom was Peter and his wife Margaret nee Mermis. His father was know to mother as mentioned above, our great great grandfather. Unfortunately his name is not known. The children of Peter Younger were: Martin, our grandfather, born Aug. 10, 1834, Andrew, John Peter, Margaret, Francis and Agnes. THe last mentioned did come to this country with the family. Peter Younger had several brothers, one of whom was Mathias who remained in Russia. Only one of his descendants later came to America. Another brother, Michael, migrated tto Brazil with his family. He died there are his descendants came to Ellis County settling for the most part in Hays, Kansas.
