They immigrated to New York, NY, from Bremen, Germany, in 1861 The ship's name was Hermann. They arrived in New York on May 27, 1861. Their destination was Houston, Texas. Peter's occupation was listed as a farmer. Peter was 29 years old and Rosalia was 23 years old. They came from a village called Reutershofen. They were found dead between 4 and 5 o'clock by their son-in-law, Sylvester Dietz, who lives two miles north of the city, and who went to the house with some provisions. The old gentleman was sitting in a chair near the stove and his wife was lying near. The stovepipe was on the floor, and from all appearances it would seem that Whitman had taken it down to clean it, and becoming fatigued, had sat down in the chair, where he had been overcome. The couple were about 70 and 73 years of age, the husband being the older. They lived alone in a little cottage in the north part of town. At an inquest it was decided that death was caused by coal gas. Note: The newspaper spelled their names wrong, its Wittmann, not Whitman. Does anybody know if Rosalias last name was spelled Riedel or Reidel. All sources vary but I have no confirmative resource such as a wedding record etc. I have ordered her death certificate. The Wittmann family will rejoice the day that this link is made. Several prayers & thoughts have been expressed through the years. William's wife appears to have several different names: Josephine, Margaret, & Barbara. Her name differs on her second marriage certificate, her first husband's obituary as printed in the paper, and on her daughter's death certificate. Based on 1910 Census information, the best conclusion is that her name is Barbara Tix. Throughout the years, our family has only known her by the nickname of Libbie/Libby. A marriage certificate was received from Richland County, North Dakota, that states that a Mrs. Josephine Wittmann, age 26, married John Peter Ehr, age 29, on October 2, 1913. John was from Hankinson, North Dakota. The application for marriage license asks if either of the parties were ever married. The following comment is noted: "Yes - Mrs. Josephine Wittmann formerly married - husband dead." Witnesses to this marriage where Nicholas Goche & Elizabeth Tix. William's newspaper obituary states that he married Margaret Tix. It is believed that the newspaper was most likely in error in regards to her name. William and his wife, Barbara had a daughter named Wilhelmina who died as a young baby of gastrointestinal problems. Wilhelmina's middle name was Josephine. Wilhelmina's death certificate has the mother listed as Barbara Tix. The birthplace of Barbara is listed as Bancroft, Iowa. The death certificate was signed by Mrs. William B. Wittman. Again, the question remains....Does anybody know what happened to William's widow Barbara Tix and their children, Irene and Dorothy??????
