their own shelters and establish their villages in the vast expanse of the Volga steppes. Their initial shelters were mere earthen huts. The original settler list for the Colony of Herzog, dated 14 JULY 1766, comprised of 35 families does not contain the surname DINKEL. It does, however, contain teh name of Johann and Anna Kuhn, names in positions 48 and 49 on Andreas A DINKEL's Pedigree Chart (included). The first reference DINKEL (Nicolaus) was located in the original settler list for the Colony of Mariental dated 1766. His name has not been found in any of the 1798 census that have currently been translateDIED The census of Herzog, dated 2 JUNE 1798, does indicated a Jakob DINKEL, had resided in Herzog but had moved to Leichtling in 1786. The 1798 census of Leichtling indicates that Jakob had resided there but had died prior to this census. His wife, Helen Ortman, and their children are included in the census of 7 OCTOBER 1798. This census indicates that Joseph, a son of Jakob and Helena, was 3 years old at the time. Additional research disclosed that Joseph was the father of Peter who was the father of Andreas. Eventually, the privileges bestowed on the settlers by the Manifesto of 1763, especially the exemption from military service, aroused the resentment of the RUSSIAns. In JANUARY 1874 a military law was passed requiring the settlers to serve in the armed services. This, the repeal of the special privileges granted by Catherine the Great in the Manifesto, aroused extreme indignation in the German settlers. In the spring of 1874, meetings were held in Herzog on the Wiesenseite, and Balzar on the Bergseite, to select scouts to the United States in search of new land to settle. The scouts returned with favorable reports. The initial military draft of settlers in 1874 precipitated matters and the first departure of settlers for the United States occurred in OCTOBER 1875. A larger group followed, departing in JUNE 1876. Our ancestors, Andreas DINKEL and Katharine KUHN, were among this latter group. Departing Saratov, this group occupied 17 coaches, some progressed to Hamberg and the remainder to Bremen. Andreas and Katharina were in the group progressing to Bremen. The Bremen group took passage on the North German Lloyd S.S. Mosel, under the command of ship master H. A. F. Neymaker. The fare was 38 rubels (27.36) per passenger. Katharina is listed as passenger 514 in steerage and Andreas is listed as passenger 542 in steerage on the passenger list of the ship, which includes 705 passengers. The S.S. Mosel arrived athe the Port of New York on 29 JULY 1876. Those coming to Kansas immediatly made arrangements, at rubles (11.52) per passenger, to proceed to Kansas arriving at Herzog/Victoria on 3 AUGUST 1876, the rubel was worth 72 cents. After arriving in Herzog, Victoria, Andreas worked at various employments including a tour with the Kansas Pacific RailroaDIED He completed application to homestead the south 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of section 32-13-16 on 26 DECEMBER 1877. Andreas and Katharina MARRIED on 21 JANUARY 1879. Their first child, Andreas A., was BORN on 28 JULY followed by NINE more children, for a total of FIVE boys and FIVE girls. He purchased his first parcel of land, the north 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of section 32-13-16, from Magdalena Riedel, on 24 OCTOBER 1884, for $425.oo. He was granted a homestead paTENt for the south 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of section 32-13-16 (applied for on 26 DECEMBER 1877) on 27 Jaunary 1887. The paTENt was given under the hand of President Grover ClevelanDIED He purchased additional lands in ellis and Trego Counties., He also purchsed Lot 5 in Block 2 in the Nicholaus DREILING addition to the town of Herzog on 26 FEBRUARY 1901 for $300.00 from Martin and Magdalena Riedel. For a more detailed account of the exodus from Germany to RUSSIA, life in the lower Volga region of RUSSIA, the exodus to America and early life of the Volga German settlers in ELLIS COUNTY, AND KANSAS, Kansas, a bibliography is available for your purchase. >From: "Margaret Heart" >To: hershey2@comcast.net, mmheart2003@hotmail.com, joy@ruraltel.net, margaret_heart2003@hotmail.com, marge2003@hotmail.com, MWalker@fhsu.edu >Subject: Re: Dinkle Query >Date: Thu, 19 Sep 2002 17:23:02 +0000 > > >The DINKELS > >DINKEL, ? The Wasingers The ancestry of Franz Wasinger and Anna Scheck is shown as far as can be ascertained from church records in St. Fidelsis Monastery, Victoria, Kansas, and from visits with some of the older people who knew Franz and Anna Wasinger. The parents of Franz Wasinger and Anna Scheck are known and documenteDIED The grandparents of Franz Wasinger are in doubt. In the mid 1930's Frank Windholtz visited with Franz Wasinger about his grandparents. Franz Wasinger said that his grandfather was Christopher Wasinger. He did not know the name of his grandmother. Helen Hall in her These Are Our Religion has a Johannes Wasinger, spouse known, as the grandfather of Franz. In "History from 1760 to 1938 of Joe Wasinger, G. Peter Wasinger, Anton Wasinger, SR., Anton DIED Wasinger" translated by Anton DIED Wasinger, is an account of a Joe Wasinger, MARRIED to a young woman named Mareda, who migrated with the Germans to RUSSIA 1764. This Joe, about thirty years old, was the father of Johannes, a Christopher, and nONE other children. This Johannes is supposedly the great great grandfather of this writer. The Christopher is the forebear of another group of Wasingers who came to the United States at the time. This writer does not know who his great great grandfather Wasinger was, but likes to believe that Grandfather Franz Wasinger knew who his grandfather was. Grandfather Franz Wasinger was about SIXty-SIX years old in 1935 to 1936 when Franz Windholz interviewed hiMARRIED According to Windholz, Grandfather had a clear, sharp mind and a good memory. So this writer likes to believe that his great great grandfather and the great great grandfather of all the third generation descendants of Franz and Anna Wasinger was a Christopher Wasinger. At age 12 the family moved to the farm outside of Quinter. She MARRIED E. J. Hecker in 1928 and they moved to Salina in the early 1940's. Mary was active in her church and with the Catholic women organizations. It is the "Pro Eccesia at Pontifice" Medal bestowed by Pope John Paul II AUGUST 11, 1982, represented by Bishop Daniel Kucera in recognition for her "notable service on behalf of the church and the Roman Pontiff". The background of the families is information from Mary (Spies) Hecker, Hilda, (Spies) Wasinger, Barbara (Spiies) Loevenstein, Sophia (Spies) Brown, Barbara (Graf) Spies and other relatives recorded by Louella (Hecker) Clennan, daughter of Mary Hecker on a trip to Western Kansas and Colorado APRIL 21-28, 1991. Mary had wanted to continue to search out genealogy information and visit her oldest sister, Sophia. Mary had recuperated from a minor stroke aand heart attack in 1990. When it was learned that Mary (who lived in Salin) was going to Sopia's house in BrighTEN, Colorad, Sophia asked her to bring the "box" that had belonged to their Dad (Peter Spies Jr.) Mary and Lou picked up Hilda in Wakeeney and continued to Quinter to visit Barb Spies (sister-in-law) and picked up the "box" from Barb Loevenstein. Good visits were made to St. Peter, Collyer, the farm in Quinter, cemeteries, churches, and Park, Kansas. Park is where Mary and her husband, Emanual, had lived when first MARRIEDIED Good visits were made to St. Petter, Collyer, the farm in Quinter, cemeteries, churches, and Park, Kansas. Park is where Mary and her husband, Emanuel, had lived when first MARRIEDIED While in Colorado, they had to visit with Katherine (Katie) Laevenstein in Denver (1st cousin). Katie MARRIED Mike Laevenstein, a brother to Jake Loevenstein, who changed the spelling of their name from o to a. It is unknown why Mike made that chnage. This was the last time Mary saw Sophia and Katie die to health probelms preventing any of them from traveling any distance. It was while in Colorado that MAY mentiONEd that "I MAY have bit off" more than I can chew." In 1997, I decided it was time to continue the work Mother could no longer do, so the weekend of JUNE 6-8. 1997 my sister Irene (Hecker) Fiffe living in Hutchinson, Kansas and my daughter, Stephanie (Clennan) Jacobson living in Olatthe, Kansas, took a trip as far as Park, Kansas. MAY home in Eldorado, Kansas. During this trip, old pictures were gaathered to make copies and additional notes wre taken. We stayed at Elsie and Kenny Loevenstein's. Elsie prepared a delicious dinnner. ONE major purpose was to see the new graveestONE of the Spies babies who died and were buried in St. Anthony's Cemetery in St. Peter. They were the children of Peter and Eva Spies. They never had a gravestONE and the small wooden crosses had long disappeareDIED Vernon Hecker (at Mother's request) made the arrangements. This is what Mother's siblings agreed needed to be dONE. The babies are buried beside their Grandparents, Peter Sr. and Christina Spies. Mother (Mary Hecker) had doene exTENsive research at court houses, sity buildings, libraries, the Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka, the American Historical Society of Germans from RUSSIA in Lincoln, Nebraska, the National Archives in Washington, DC, as well as letters and dphONE calls. She found reporots were poorly writTEN, misspelling of names, and both parents not listed when requireDIED Many times only baptisimal date was available and not the date of birth. I have tried my best to puut it alll together. Thank you to all who haave helped fill in the gaps and make corrections. There is still incomplete and probably inaccurate iinformation and for this I'm sorry. Time constraints didn't allow deeper research and I thought it was more important to get this "family history" to familly members before too many years passeDIED MAY God bless and watch over our families. Although this book is about the descendants of Peter Spies Sr. (BORN) in 1857) and AntONE Katzendown (BORN 1848) and in particular Peter Spies Jr. (BORN 1881) and Eva Maria Katzendorn (BORN 1886), it seems only right ti relate some background history as to why many Germans left Germany for RUSSIA in 1766. Germany There was unrest in Europe under the leadership of Fredrick the Great. The SEVEN years War had just ended (Countris were fighting the German kingddoms of PRUSSIA, Hanover and Great Britain, (and had brought disaster to many Germann people. There was economic crisis in all of Europe; and also high taxes, lack of freedom of religion, and poverty, causing, much dissatisfaction. Catherine the GReat ascended to the thrown of the Czars as Empress of RUSSIA and wanted her reign to be noticed by the worlDIED She wanted settlers in RUSSIA, mainly farmers, to develop the semi-arid areas in vast uninhibited steppe regions on the Volga River. She also felt that developing this land would serve as a buffer against the Heathen nomadic tribes who periodically attacked the RUSSIAns in the area. Being German by birth, her invitation went to Germany. Her first Manifesto produced no results. Her second Manifesto of JULY 22, 1763, promised more and was delivered by men of German birth to induce as many as possible of their countryment to emigrate to RUSSIA. They made RUSSIA sould like paradis, and offered inducements not in the manifest. The manifest offered (stated briefly) 1. Settle wherever they pleased and could pursue their occupations 2.....Freedom of relion--churches and schools, priests and ministers. 3. Would receive mONEy to defray travel expense 4. In RUSSIA, would be lent mONEy, interst free with 10 years payback 5. Volga River Settlers would be exempt from taxes. 6. LLowere Volga Settlers could shoose their own government 7. Settlers with mONEy were not taxed if the mONEy was used for personal use 8. All male immigrants would be exempt from military duty indefinitely 9. Factories and Industries established would be free for TEN years. 10. Free to leave the country at any time but would have to pay a tax on their efforts. Peter Spies, age 29, along with his wife, Christina, age 30, and TWO children Peter Jr. and Johannes, arrived in Baltimore Maryland FEBRUARY 21, 1988. They were on the boat FOURteen days. Christina knew how to reaDIED Peter did dnot. According to the dates of birth, it appears that Christina was pregnant on the ship, as Teckler was BORN in America in 1888. They went to Victoria, Kansas by train to Christina's sister, Catherine, who was marrried to John GOETZ. Barbara Graf Spies' Grandparents sponsored Peter and Christina Spies to Amerrica. Albert Graf in Hays, Kansas has papers to show the Graf's sponsored theMARRIED They settled in St. Peter, Kansas,, in Graham County in 1888 or 1889. According to the Book The St. Peter Kansas People and their town, Peter Spies owned the Southwest quarter section of lot 11. It was east of the church. He also had a farm outside of St. Peter about FOUR miles east and ONE mile south. According to Mary (Spies) Hecker, her grandfather, Peter, had beautiful horses that he trained to dance. She wass impressed at their beeauty. He would decorate the wagon and horses for weddings. The bride would ride in the horse drawn wagon to the church. Peter Spies had the first Model T Ford in St. Peter. At harvest time, JULY 3, 1916 he drove to Moreland for groceries. His car ran off the road coming back home. He had a broken neck. He was taken to his home where he dieDIED He was 58 years olDIED Christina Terre' Spies was a very quiet woman. Sophia, Mary and Hilda (her grandchildren) remember. her as always sitting in a char and prayying the Rosary. They thought she must have been homesick for RUSSIA. They stated that she was a thin woman. She was extremely parrticular and neat so she didn't want the Grandchildren in her house. She would go visit her children's homes. There are no pictures of their hosue. After Peter Sr. died she sold the land and the hosue on the farm, but kept the house in town. Isadore, their son, was still living at home but when he was old enough, he joined the army. She must have then sold the house in St. Peter because she took turns living with her children. She was at Peter Jr's house in Quinter when she dieDIED Sophia (Spies) Broan tells this account of the incident: Momma had gONE to the store and Gandma was sitting on the back porch on the chair she always sat in to rest or pray. She never talked much. i (Sophia) was in the kitchen. Grandma called to me "Sophia, I have to lay down, I am very sick." "What's wrong grandma?" "I canot get my breath, I can not get anyy breath, so open the door." I (Sophia) put water on her and helped her and said, "Don't die." So I ran out fast. It was far away and then I told Dad, "Dad, hurry home, Grandma is very, very, sick." Then Dad drove back with the horses and when he came back to the house she wass deaDIED Peter and Christina's second child, Johannes Spies, died at age 44, from suicide. His first wife died after FIVE years of marriage. He left the area to get a joborn Their FOUR children were raised by their grandparents Bollig. He would visit sometimes. His second wife, Ruth Burns, was from Ellsworth, Kansas. He was estranged frim her and was in Hutchinson, Kansas when he shot into a group at the hosue where she was staying in Hutchinson, and then shot himself. The Spies' adopted Isadore Barker when he was 4 years of age. It was not unusual, as the children gre older, MARRIED, and left home, for families to adopt children fromt he orphan train. They provided help for the necessary farm work. Isador was the SEVENth living child of Peter and Christina Spies. He left home about the age of 18 and joined the Army.
